The following is an update on the volatile legislative and political landscape in Washington and the implications for WERU’s core operational support. WERU receives a significant portion (25%) of its funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is currently facing escalating challenges at the federal level.

(June 3) The Trump Administration has sent Congress a rescissions package to eliminate $1.1 billion in already-approved CPB funding. If enacted, this action would instantly destabilize local public and community radio and TV stations nationwide. It would rip essential services out of communities and force some rural stations off-air. The House is expected to vote within days. We urge all WERU friends and supporters to contact our elected officials in Congress (call or write) and urge them to oppose the recissions package. “Read more” for additional information. WERU has once again been nominated for a Down East Best of Maine award, for Best Radio Station in Maine! Now it’s up to us to get out the vote! Love a good story? Love science? Then you will likely love Taproom Science Tales, at Fogtown Brewing on Wednesday, June 11th from 6:00-7:30PM. Hear local storytellers and neighbors share personal, real-life stories about how science shows up in the most unexpected ways. You may even consider sharing a story of your own! Since 2002, Maine artist Robert Shetterly and Americans Who Tell the Truth have created and presented 280 portraits of Americans they describe as “Models of Courageous Citizenship.” Shetterly’s most recent portrait subject is Rivera Sun, activist and award-winning author of The Dandelion Insurrection and many other books, whose portrait was unveiled at the Bay School in Blue Hill on May 4. She was introduced by her dear friend and previous portrait subject, renowned activist, lawyer, and Penobscot Nation member Sherri Mitchell Weh’na Ha’mu Kwasset.
