Please check castinehistoricalsociety.org for dates and times or call 207-326-4118 \nFrancis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art explores the life and career of Francis Hamabe (1917 – 2002)\, who spent more than forty years living and working in Maine. Francis Hamabe’s Maine is truly a collaborative exhibition\, with nearly every object\, archival document\, and photograph loaned to us for this first-of-its-kind career retrospective of Hamabe. Curated by Carl Little\, a curator\, art critic\, and friend of Hamabe\, Francis Hamabe’s Maine is a joyful exploration of an artist’s interpretation of Maine. \nFrom Blue Hill to Castine to Machias\, Hamabe’s artworks are a love letter to Maine. Hamabe’s career as a graphic designer\, silkscreen artist\, painter\, cartoonist\, and puppeteer had a lasting impact on his adoptive state of Maine. This exhibition follows his early life as a Japanese American living in Orange\, New Jersey\, to his service in World War II and the aftermath of Japanese internment\, to his life as a working artist in downeast Maine. Hamabe cultivated a large network of friends and fellow artists\, creating a generational legacy for Maine’s artists. \nHamabe was constantly creating works. Whether they were silkscreen prints\, sumi ink drawings\, or large-scale paintings\, his artwork can be found all over the state and country. This exhibition features more than forty of his original artworks. He had a particularly large impact on the Blue Hill Peninsula through his art classes\, which he taught in both private homes and public locations\, including here in Castine. This exhibition includes several works of art done by his students in Castine\, and his lasting influence is apparent in these works.

SUMMARY:Bagaduce Chorale Spring Concert "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace"
DESCRIPTION:The 80-voice Bagaduce Chorale and the GEM Orchestra\, under the direction of Bronwyn Kortge present Sir Karl Jenkins’ magnum opus “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace”. This 13-movement work uses diverse texts\, to chronicle the fevered descent into war\, the infinite horror of conflict\, the desolate aftermath of aggression and the tentative movement towards peace. The work is notable for its powerful and accessible melodies\, its rich blend of musical genres and the theatricality of the compositions. \nThis will be a multimedia performance with the “Armed Man Film\,” a work specially commissioned by Sir Karl running simultaneously with choral performance. This will be the first time that “The Armed Man” is presented in Maine with the accompanying film. We are proud to bring this multimedia performance to our Downeast Maine audience!

DESCRIPTION:The Wallflowers Announce 30th Anniversary Tour for Bringing Down the Horse\nThe Wallflowers will mark the 30th anniversary of their landmark album Bringing\nDown the Horse with a nationwide U.S. tour kicking off April 17\, 2026. The band\nwill perform their classic album in its entirety\, in sequence. The tour will also\ninclude a performance at Stagecoach\, the world’s largest country music festival.\nOriginally released on May 21\, 1996\, Bringing Down the Horse was a critical and\ncommercial triumph. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and\nwas certified quadruple platinum\, cementing the band’s place in ‘90s rock history.\nThe LP yielded four hit singles:\n• “6th Avenue Heartache” – Two Grammy nominations (1997)\n• “One Headlight” – Reached #1 on the Billboard singles chart\, winning two\nGrammy Awards (1998). The songranked #58 on Rolling Stone’s “100\nGreatest Pop Songs”\n• “The Difference” – Grammy nomination (1998)\n• “Three Marlenas” – Released as the album’s final single in October 1997\nInfluenced by a slew of first-generation American songwriters including The Band\nand Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers\, The Wallflowers will also pay tribute on the\nupcoming tour to the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ by playing\nPetty’s 1982 album Long After Dark in its entirety and in sequence as well.\nJakob Dylan\, the band’s chief songwriter\, remains a vital performer in American\nrock music.
