We will cover the ecology and biology of the seaweed ecosystem\, hand-harvest techniques\, regulations\, drying\, processing and culmination of the wild algae species that abound in our area. \nHarvesting\, drying\, recipes\, ecology\, and natural history are all part of the Low Low Tides adventure. Downeast Maine is famous for our 22-foot tides\, and the cold Labrador current creates extraordinary algal abundance.

SUMMARY:“Paint the Peninsula Week”  Fresh Paint Auction
DESCRIPTION:If you were out and about on the Blue Hill Peninsula recently\, you may have seen artists capturing a local landscape on canvas as part of the Blue Hill Public Library’s annual Paint the Peninsula fundraiser. More than ninety artists will create over one hundred paintings for the week-long auction\, which starts Monday\, July 13th. \nThis much-anticipated annual event showcases the work of local and seasonal artists\, including newcomers\, in an online auction during the week of July 13th to 18th. There will be a closing reception on Saturday\, July 18th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The final moments of bidding will take place during the reception\, which always leads to additional excitement. Last year’s auction yielded over $50\,000 in revenue and raised almost $34\,000 for the library. \nDuring the auction week\, paintings will be available for viewing online\, or in-person at the library. Offering a broad range of painting styles and points of view\, Paint the Peninsula Week is a great opportunity to start buying local art or add to an established collection. \nThis is the Blue Hill Library’s largest event fundraiser. Proceeds support both the library’s operating budget and the local arts community. DESCRIPTION:The series of programs\, “Revolutionary Belfast” continues at the Belfast Free Library continues with this talk with author and AP U.S. History teacher Charles H. “Chip” Lagerbom. \nIn this illustrated presentation Lagerbom will describe the discovery and history of Jonathan Lowder’s Truckhouse which was built along the banks of Penobscot River near present-day Veazie. he Truckhouse site was discovered in the summer of 1988\, while actually searching for a different colonial site. This is the story of early mid-Maine colonial history and a war-time Truckhouse right here in our backyard. \nCharles H. “Chip” Lagerbom received his B.A. in History from Kansas State University and M.A. in History and Archaeology from University of Maine at Orono with the excavation and analysis of a Revolutionary War Truckhouse or trading post. An avid diver\, Charles has organized shipwreck surveys in Maine lakes\, the 1779 Penobscot Expedition and the 17th century English galleon Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid. He travels to and speaks frequently on topics regarding Antarctica\, Cape Horn\, Maine whaling and New England colonial and maritime history.
