SUMMARY:“Paint the Peninsula Week”  Fresh Paint Auction
DESCRIPTION:If you were out and about on the Blue Hill Peninsula recently\, you may have seen artists capturing a local landscape on canvas as part of the Blue Hill Public Library’s annual Paint the Peninsula fundraiser. More than ninety artists will create over one hundred paintings for the week-long auction\, which starts Monday\, July 13th. \nThis much-anticipated annual event showcases the work of local and seasonal artists\, including newcomers\, in an online auction during the week of July 13th to 18th. There will be a closing reception on Saturday\, July 18th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The final moments of bidding will take place during the reception\, which always leads to additional excitement. Last year’s auction yielded over $50\,000 in revenue and raised almost $34\,000 for the library. \nDuring the auction week\, paintings will be available for viewing online\, or in-person at the library. Offering a broad range of painting styles and points of view\, Paint the Peninsula Week is a great opportunity to start buying local art or add to an established collection. \nThis is the Blue Hill Library’s largest event fundraiser. Proceeds support both the library’s operating budget and the local arts community. For this lecture\, the Ashley Bryan Papers will serve as a case study for exploring the role that curators play in determining not just what gets collected and preserved\, but also what gets studied\, exhibited\, and otherwise shared with the public. Bryan’s papers reveal the many dimensions of his experience\, including as a Black soldier during World War II\, and illustrate how what is preserved from the past can affect how history\, now and in the future\, is written and remembered. 34 Mt. Somerson taught in the Haystack wood studio in 1994\, 2006\, and 2008\, and served on Haystack’s Board of Trustees from 2017–2021. She became a Life Trustee in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library will present a poetry reading with poets Christine Yurick and David Yezzi on Thursday\, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Howard Room. \nDavid Yezzi’s latest books are “Late Romance: Anthony Hecht—A Poet’s Life” (St. Martin’s Press) and More Things in Heaven: New and Selected Poems (Measure Press). He teaches in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University and is a 2024 James Merrill House Fellow and a 2025-6 Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. \nChristine Yurick is the founding editor of Think Journal and her poems have appeared in E-Verse\, Angle\, American Arts Quarterly\, Tulane Review\, and 823 on High\, among other journals.
