SUMMARY:"Honoring Frank:" The Artwork of Francis Hamabe Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library will present\, “Honoring Frank\,” a comprehensive exhibit at the Blue Hill Public Library of the works of Francis Hamabe (1917-2002)\, beginning with prints created in the 1940s while he was overseas during World War II\, until his last drawings\, made from a hospital bed in 2002. “Honoring Frank” will open on August 3rd and continue to the 29th. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday\, August 7th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The special exhibit is presented in conjunction with the Castine Historical Society\, which is hosting “Francis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art” through October 12. \nWorks on display will include cartoons\, cubist style paintings\, abstract works\, painted ceramics\, silkscreens on nautical charts\, and posters. Frank was multifaceted as he worked fluidly between his varied styles depicting images of Blue Hill\, his home for 47 years\, and coastal and eastern Maine towns from Camden to Bangor to Machias in watercolors and prints. \nThe artists Hamabe most admired were Stuart Davis\, Alexander Calder\, and John Marin\, whose influence is evident in Hamabe’s recurring themes of harbor views\, fishing boats\, churches\, Maine villages\, and children playing. His work was also rooted in both Japanese and Swedish cultures\, reflecting his own heritage. His later calligraphic images leap off the page in exuberant color with gestural movement\, while his line drawings of village life are reminiscent of Scandinavian folk designs. \nMany of the works included in the exhibit are on loan from private collectors\, some of whom worked with him at the University of Maine in Orono when he was the director for the Maine Public radio station. Down East Magazine covers\, greeting cards\, notes\, and the leather satchel he used to carry his painting supplies will be on view. There will be a selection of prints and paintings for sale with part of the proceeds benefiting the library. \nAccompanying the exhibit is a catalogue featuring items culled from the library’s Hamabe archives\, donated by his widow\, Phyllis Hamabe\, in 2012. These items touch on his early years in Orange\, New Jersey where he was born and raised\, the son of a Japanese immigrant father and Swedish immigrant mother. Photographs document his time as an enlisted medic in the US Army and later as the first art teacher at the Farnsworth Museum. Also included are press clippings from his puppet performances\, his 1996 honorary degree from the University of Maine at Machias\, and recollections from students\, colleagues\, and friends who knew him best. \nFrank was an artist of extraordinary kindness and generosity\, who loved his family\, friends\, and community. Ultimately his legacy\, through his work and the lives he touched\, is one of joy and laughter. \n“Honoring Frank” is curated by Jennifer Mitchell-Nevin\, Anne Nevin\, and Marcia Stremlau. The exhibition will be available for viewing during library hours in the Britton Gallery and Roland Howard Room through August 29th\, with access to artwork in the Howard Room subject to the meeting schedule. SUMMARY:Dreaming at Dawn
DESCRIPTION:A burst of light\, a pageant of color and the hope of a new day. But filter those elements through the mind’s eye and they react in unexpected\, exciting and even fantastical ways. Presented by the Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA)\, the upcoming “Dreaming at Dawn” exhibition in Bangor will showcase art inspired by daybreak in Maine\, both literally and conceptually. \nThe show opens August 1 and runs through September 30 at the Bangor Public Library\, 145 Harlow Street\, in Bangor\, Maine. Featuring 68 pieces by 51 artists from across the state\, such a large show requires the combined space of the library’s Cyr\, Stairwell and Lecture Hall Galleries. The Lecture Hall Gallery will also host a Meet the Artists Reception on Thursday\, August 6\, at 5-7 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. \nExhibition coordinators Shanna Compton and Sally Stanton encouraged contributors to push the thematic boundaries of “Dreaming at Dawn.” The artists responded with a wide range of media including painting\, printmaking\, assemblage\, photography\, collage\, sculpture and textile. Some pieces depict naturalistic scenes of morning’s first light as it trickles through shaded woodlands or curtained windows. Others use abstract shapes and colors to represent the illumination that only comes to dreamers in the depths of sleep. \n“One widely held belief is that the dreams we experience near dawn are those saturated with our truest creativity\, our most deeply imagined\, and those most likely to become reality\,” said Compton. “What visions will we awaken? What possibilities will we dream?” \nThe show’s juror is Peter Walls. He has been an exhibiting studio artist for 29 years\, specializing in shaped panel paintings and murals. From his home in Midcoast Maine\, he collaborates on public and private projects throughout New England. DESCRIPTION:Bartlett Woods Retirement Community welcomes renowned Maine painter Sam Cady to speak about legendary Maine painter Cicely Aikman on Monday\, July 13th\, from 10-11am. The free ART TALK coincides with the current exhibition “CHICKADEES\, ALLIGATORS AND STONEHENGE\,” featuring the work of Cicely Aikman\, along with Janice Kasper and Dirk McDonnell. Located at 20 Bartlett Drive (just off Talbot Avenue between Broadway and Old County Road)\, the non-profit retirement community continues its commitment to its Art at Bartlett Program through hosting this public program.\nBoth Cady and Aikman are represented by Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland\, ME. The exhibition is on loan from the Gallery through August 28th; public hours are Sunday through Friday\, 9-4pm. Parking along the Bartlett driveway is suggested.\nAbout the Artists:\nSam Cady (American b. 1943). Born in Boothbay Harbor\, Maine and raised in a leafy suburb of Boston\, Sam Cady is a self-described New Englander. After receiving a BA at the University of New Hampshire (1965) and a MFA at Indiana University (1967)\, Cady taught art for 2 years in New Hampshire before moving to New York City in 1969. He lived and worked on the lower east side of Manhattan and in Hoboken\, NJ for most of the next 30 years exhibiting his work and teaching in the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts. With exposure to all the “isms” of recent American art he found his way with realism\, pop\, and minimalist influences from Hopper\, Oldenburg and Kelly often with shaped or cutout oil on canvas images of bits and pieces of the everyday world. His first major exposure was in the 1975 Whitney Museum Biennial and continued along with regular gallery exhibitions in NY\, Boston and Rockland\, Maine with other museum and gallery shows around the country and in Japan. After being in the city for 30 years he moved to Friendship\, Maine (where he had summered as a child) in 2000\, built a studio and continued to work\, exhibit\, and teach. He is in many private\, corporate\, and museum collections around the country and was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and an American Academy of Arts and Letters purchase prize. His aim throughout has been to explore and celebrate both the constructed and natural worlds that we are all surrounded by (courtesy Anderson Yezerski Gallery).\nCicely Aikman (American 1923-2013). Born in Texas\, where she lived until the age of six\, Aikman spent her childhood in Los Angeles – a child of the west – before going to high school in Washington D.C. She studied at the Corcoran School of Fine Arts (1938-40)\, the University of Chicago (1940-42)\, and the Art Student League with mentor Morris Cantor (1942-1946). Aikman reflected “This was a serious art education – our only regret was that due to World War ll\, we could not go to Europe\, in particular to Paris to see\, first-hand\, the works of Picasso and Matisse.”\nAfter the war\, Aikman traveled to Italy by boat with her young son\, Paul\, and lived in bohemian circles with others\, drawn like Aikman\, to the cultural life in Rome\, Paris and elsewhere. Back in New York\, Aikman began showing her work along with her downtown peers\, among them Lois Dodd\, Rudy Burkhardt and Gretna Campbell at the Pyramid Gallery. In the forties and fifties\, Aikman painted winters in the city and summers in Provincetown\, MA. She exhibited in New York with Green Mountain Gallery\, the Blue Mountain Gallery\, the Artists’ Gallery\, the Westbeth Gallery\, and with the Provincetown Art Association\, while raising her son and holding down a series of jobs. She moved to Maine in 1973 with her second husband\, Fred Scherer\, whom she had met through her work at the Museum of Natural History in New York. Aikman began to show at Caldbeck Gallery in 1990. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums\, including the Farnsworth Art Museum\, The Portland Museum of Art\, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and Roundtop Center for the Arts. Her work “January”\, was included in WINTER IN MAINE by Carl Little\, published by Down East Books. Aikman maintained a vigorous studio practice\, splitting her time between Friendship\, Maine and the Indian River in Florida. From our incredible scenery to the beautiful boats found in our harbors\, Winter Harbor provides the perfect glimpse into the values and beauties of Maine. \nThese pieces have been done through many studies and trips along the coast\, and for this collection of work I wanted to showcase the array of boats found in our harbors. From Hinckley yachts and cutters to the dinghies found tied up at our docks and marinas\, the craftsmanship that goes into water vessels has always inspired me. \nAs I sit in these harbors admiring God’s creation coupled with the craftsmanship of man\, I am forever humbled and grateful to be able to experience it\, and I can’t help but try to capture these amazing scenes in paint. \nI am incredibly grateful to be returning to Hammond Hall\, and showing my work to my hometown once again.
