DESCRIPTION:Birding expert and guide\, environmentalist\, and author Bob Duchesne will speak at Hammond Hall on Wednesday\, June 17 at 1:00 pm on the topic Why Maine Is Weird\, in a birding sense. The event is sponsored by the Winter Harbor Public Library.\nDuchesne will detail why Maine is different from every other state\, with its geological history\, its long coastline\, its forests—to name a few—that makes it a great place to birdwatch and explains why it has the birds it does.\nBob Duchesne became interested in birds in the first grade. That interest grew into a passion. After a 31-year career in radio\, Bob Duchesne retired and went on to serve six terms in the Maine House of Representatives\, chairing the Environment and Natural Resources Committee\, and later the Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Committee. In 2009\, he started his own guiding business\, the Maine Birding Trail\, and published the book\, Maine Birding Trail: The Official Guide to More than 260 Accessible Sites. Today\, Duchesne is a chapter board member and frequent field trip leader for Maine Audubon. He writes a weekly birding column for the Bangor Daily News and produces YouTube videos about birding in Maine and beyond. A frequent visitor to the Schoodic Peninsula\, you might catch him watching for seabirds at Acadia National Park/Schoodic in the winter months. The concert will be held on June 14\, 2026 at 4pm at The Strom Auditorium at Camden Hills Regional High School.\nBeyond the performance itself\, the chorus will present a community grant of $5\,000 to Come Spring Food Pantry\, a local organization working on the front lines of food insecurity gleaning surplus produce\, reducing food waste\, and serving neighbors with dignity.\nThe concert program draws on music that speaks to themes of equity\, compassion\, and community – from modern classics like Ysaye Barnwell’s Hope to choral versions of classic folks songs like David Mallett’s The Garden Song to contemporary pieces that reflect the world we live in like Crowded Table by the High Women. Special guest vocalists Michael Weferling and Willow Watts will perform. The grant presentation will take place as part of the program\, making the connection between artistic expression and community action visible and tangible for audience members\, who will be invited to sing along on the iconic anthem of resistance and resilience\, “We Shall Overcome”.\n“Music has always been a vehicle for justice\,” said Anna Jones\, Executive Director of Midcoast Community Chorus. “This concert is our opportunity to put that belief into practice\, not just in the songs we sing\, but in what we do with -and for- the community we have built together.”\nCome Spring Food Pantry\, based in Union\, serves the Midcoast through a combination of traditional food pantry services and gleaning – recovering fresh food from farms\, markets\, and restaurants that would otherwise go to waste. DESCRIPTION:The Hancock Woman’s Club and Hancock Historical Society will revive two cabaret shows which were performed by members of the Woman’s Club and members of the community in 1972 and 1983. The historical cabaret promises to be a nostalgic evening of music\, dance\, and storytelling. It was originally staged to raise money for the Woman’s Club and bring the community together. This blast from the past will include an original film\, show costumes\, and a panel of former participants to showcase a vibrant part of Hancock’s history. The museum will open at 6:00 pm for browsing before the show. Light refreshments will be served afterward.

SUMMARY:Ride with the Alewives Bicycle Tour
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that it has been over 100 years since alewives have been able to swim directly from the Atlantic Ocean to China Lake in East Vassalboro? Participate in a cycling tour covering a 14-mile stretch while stopping at various fish ladders and dam removals that facilitate the alewives’ return to their native lake. This will be an informative naturalist tour exploring the different dams within the area\, the history behind the removal of some dams\, and the creation of fish ladders at others to enable the passage of alewives to their native spawning ground. We will include a stop for a picnic lunch in East Vassalboro.  \nJoin us for an engaging ride with the Alewives\, where you can also gain new insights. This event is free of charge and welcomes individuals who enjoy riding road bikes\, cross bikes\, or e-bikes. The ride will proceed at a moderate pace and include several stops to explore historical sites. Participants are required to have a spare tube\, to wear bright-colored clothing and a helmet.  Don’t forget your lunch! \nThe riding route map: Alewives Bike Ride – 14 Miles – MapMyRide  Limited to 12 participants and registration will be required. \nDifficulty Rating \n4 – Moderate \nDifficulty Rating Definition: \nFitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action.

Registration\, with coffee and donuts\, starts at 8:30 at the Sebec Reading Room\, 665 Moulton Hill Rd\, Sebec\, ME  The race starts at 10:00. It’s an 8-mile paddle with some Class II in the beginning. Race ends at Veterans Park\, Milo. Volunteers will gladly bring you back to your car when done. Entry fee helps support local children\, family and community programs and will get you a race tee shirt\, sandwich\, dessert and beverages\, raffle prizes and medals at the end.
