SUMMARY:Overdose Awareness Day event
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day\, Healthy Acadia’s INSPIRE Recovery Community Center will host a community remembrance event Monday\, Aug. 31\, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Knowlton Park on State Street in Ellsworth. The free event is open to all. \nCommunity members are invited to gather in remembrance\, honor those we have lost\, and show support for the families and communities impacted by overdose. The event will feature a special butterfly tribute honoring the 390 Mainers who died from overdose in 2025. \nA community memory board will be available for attendees to share messages\, photos and memories in honor of loved ones. The event will also offer overdose prevention and harm reduction resources\, including free naloxone (Narcan)\, fentanyl and xylazine test strips\, and information about recovery support. \nNaloxone is a safe\, lifesaving medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. It has no harmful effect on someone who is not experiencing an opioid overdose. \n“Overdose touches families and communities in ways that are difficult to put into words\,” said Amber Kennedy\, INSPIRE Center Manager. “This gathering gives us an opportunity to remember the people we have lost\, support one another\, and make sure our community has access to resources that can save lives.” \nHealthy Acadia’s INSPIRE Recovery Community Center\, located at 24 Church St. in Ellsworth\, provides a welcoming community space where people in recovery can connect with one another and access support. The center serves as a hub for recovery meetings\, recovery coaching\, and programs and services that support health and well-being. \nFor more information about the event or to learn about overdose prevention and recovery resources\, contact INSPIRE Recovery Community Center at 207-412-2288. Follow INSPIRE on Facebook or Instagram. \nHealthy Acadia is a 501(c)(3) community health organization working to build vibrant communities and make it easier for people throughout Hancock and Washington counties to lead healthy lives. SUMMARY:Skywatching: Human-Bird Relationships Through Time feat. Dr. Bonnie Newsom\, Angi King Johnson\, and Olivia Olson (Schoodic Institute's Summer Lecture Series)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Schoodic Institute or online via Zoom on Tuesday\, September 8 at 7:00pm for Skywatching: Human-Bird Relationships Through Time\, our 2026 Summer Lecture Series closing event featuring Dr. Bonnie Newsom (Associate Professor of Anthropology and Associate Faculty in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine)\, Angi King Johnson (interpretive naturalist and raptor specialist)\, and Olivia Olson (M.S. University of Maine and Public Programs and Volunteer Manager at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). \nAs the autumn winds increase and the days shorten\, Acadia experiences waves of migrating sea and shore birds\, warblers\, and raptors\, an annual phenomenon that provides an opportunity to consider human relationships with birds. In this panel discussion\, Dr. Bonnie Newsom will present on Wabanaki cultural associations with birds. These stories are grounded in gifts and creations Wabanaki ancestors left behind in shell mounds\, and Olivia Olson will share her analysis of bird-related materials recovered from cultural heritage spaces in and beyond Acadia. Angi King Johnston\, lead volunteer for the Cadillac Mountain Hawk Watch\, will make connections from past to present\, describing trends observed over the last thirty years of watching the skies from the highest mountain on the East Coast. \nRegister online at https://schoodicinstitute.org/event/summer-lecture-series-skywatching/ \nSchoodic Institute’s 2026 Summer Lecture Series events are free\, thanks to support from our generous sponsor\, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.

SUMMARY:One Nation\, Under Fraud: The Penobscot Remonstrance and the Fight for Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion offering a critical examination of Maine’s historical and legal relationship with the Wabanaki Nations. \nDrawing on archival records—including the 1942 Maine Legislative Research Committee hearings—and landmark court decisions such as Murch v. Tomer and State v. Newell\, the discussion reveals how law and policy were deliberately shaped to control\, diminish\, and deny Wabanaki sovereignty. Through a combination of historical narrative and legal analysis\, the panel explores what the authors describe as “genocide by jurisprudence”—the use of law as a tool of dispossession—and the enduring consequences of those decisions today. \nThe panel brings together Chief Judge\, Penobscot Nation Tribal Court\, Hon. Eric M. Mehnert; Tribal Appellate Judge\, Hon. Joseph G.E. Gousse\, Attorney\, Berman & Simmons; and Hon. Donna M. Loring\, Penobscot Nation Elder and former Representative\, Maine State Legislature. Each panelist brings a distinct perspective: judicial insight from the Tribal Courts\, lived experience in state government\, and a shared commitment to truth-telling grounded in the historical record. Together\, they will examine how these “paper chains” were forged—and what it will take to break them. \nFollowing the panel at 6:30 p.m\, participants are invited to continue the conversation next door at the Abbe Museum\, where the exhibit “In the Shadow of the Eagle” offers a powerful visual and cultural companion to the issues discussed. Co-curated by Donna Loring\, in collaboration with Wabanaki scholars and artists\, the exhibit explores parallel narratives of Wabanaki self-governance and the imposition of state and federal authority—bringing to life the history\, resilience\, and ongoing struggle for sovereignty that remain at the heart of this discussion. \nPresented in partnership with the MDI Historical Society\, the Abbe Museum\, and the Jesup Memorial Library\, and based on Donna Loring’s article “One Nation Under Fraud\,” featured in the 2026 edition of the history journal ‘Chebacco. ‘
