SUMMARY:Swordfish in Wabanaki Homeland
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological sites along the Maine coast show that swordfish existed in the Gulf of Maine between approximately 5\,500 and 3\,700 years ago. Excavations at multiple Maine sites have produced swordfish rostra\, vertebrae\, and other remains\, indicating that Wabanaki ancestors harvested and processed these large fish for millennia. In this presentation\, Dr. Bonnie Newsom will discuss the presence of swordfish in Wabanaki homeland and what these archaeological data reveal about past marine conditions\, Wabanaki fishing practices\, and how climate change affected local ecosystems. Through archaeological study of swordfish remains from the Gulf of Maine\, we can appreciate the sophisticated relationship Indigenous peoples had with swordfish specifically\, and the marine environment more broadly.

SUMMARY:People-Nature-Art with Painter Sean Murtha
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his life\, Sean Murtha’s interest in science and nature never waned\, even as he pursued a degree in art. In fact\, science and nature usually formed the basis for his artwork. In 1995\, five years after he earned an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, N.Y.\, he found the perfect marriage of art and natural science when he began working for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. There he learned the art of diorama background painting\, a rare skill he continues to use at museums to this day.\nThe Wendell Gilley Museum welcomes him on Tuesday\, Aug. 18 as the People-Nature-Art presenter for the month. There will be an in-person artist’s reception at 6 p.m. at the Gilley\, followed by a presentation at 7 p.m. that will happen in person\, and livecast online simultaneously. Admission is free but registration is required.

University of Maine and Public Programs and Volunteer Manager at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). \nAs the autumn winds increase and the days shorten\, Acadia experiences waves of migrating sea and shore birds\, warblers\, and raptors\, an annual phenomenon that provides an opportunity to consider human relationships with birds. DESCRIPTION:The 1836 burning of the steamship Royal Tar in Penobscot Bay became one of Maine’s most remarkable maritime disasters. In this illustrated presentation\, Capt. Dennis Dorsey will discuss the findings of an eighteen-year investigation into the vessel\, its operation\, the people and animals aboard\, its final voyage\, the development of the fire\, rescue efforts\, conflicting witness accounts\, and the events that followed. \nThe presentation also examines how archival records\, contemporary newspaper accounts\, maritime evidence\, and other surviving information were compared and evaluated to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
