SUMMARY:Skywatching: Human-Bird Relationships Through Time feat. Dr. Bonnie Newsom\, Angi King Johnson\, and Olivia Olson (Schoodic Institute's Summer Lecture Series)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Schoodic Institute or online via Zoom on Tuesday\, September 8 at 7:00pm for Skywatching: Human-Bird Relationships Through Time\, our 2026 Summer Lecture Series closing event featuring Dr. Bonnie Newsom (Associate Professor of Anthropology and Associate Faculty in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine)\, Angi King Johnson (interpretive naturalist and raptor specialist)\, and Olivia Olson (M.S. University of Maine and Public Programs and Volunteer Manager at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). \nAs the autumn winds increase and the days shorten\, Acadia experiences waves of migrating sea and shore birds\, warblers\, and raptors\, an annual phenomenon that provides an opportunity to consider human relationships with birds. In this panel discussion\, Dr. Bonnie Newsom will present on Wabanaki cultural associations with birds. These stories are grounded in gifts and creations Wabanaki ancestors left behind in shell mounds\, and Olivia Olson will share her analysis of bird-related materials recovered from cultural heritage spaces in and beyond Acadia. Angi King Johnston\, lead volunteer for the Cadillac Mountain Hawk Watch\, will make connections from past to present\, describing trends observed over the last thirty years of watching the skies from the highest mountain on the East Coast. \nRegister online at https://schoodicinstitute.org/event/summer-lecture-series-skywatching/ \nSchoodic Institute’s 2026 Summer Lecture Series events are free\, thanks to support from our generous sponsor\, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.

SUMMARY:Lecture with Capt. Dennis Dorsey: “The Burning of the Royal Tar\, 1836”
DESCRIPTION:The 1836 burning of the steamship Royal Tar in Penobscot Bay became one of Maine’s most remarkable maritime disasters. In this illustrated presentation\, Capt. Dennis Dorsey will discuss the findings of an eighteen-year investigation into the vessel\, its operation\, the people and animals aboard\, its final voyage\, the development of the fire\, rescue efforts\, conflicting witness accounts\, and the events that followed. \nThe presentation also examines how archival records\, contemporary newspaper accounts\, maritime evidence\, and other surviving information were compared and evaluated to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the disaster. Dorsey’s investigation culminated in his recently published book\, SJ23 Totality of the Circumstances\, The Burning of the Royal Tar\, 1836. \nMore info and a link to livestream will be shared soon. \nThis event will take place in the Mitchell Room\, at 17 School Street.

SUMMARY:People-Nature-Art with Sculptor Spencer Tinkham
DESCRIPTION:Spencer Tinkham is a self-taught\, award-winning American wood sculptor and multidisciplinary artist known for creating intricate macro- and micro-sculptures of birds and wildlife from reclaimed and salvaged material. His paintings\, sculptures\, and installations explore perception\, ecological change\, and natural history. \nThe Gilley is thrilled to bring him to Maine in September as the museum’s People-Nature-Art presenter. While here\, he will be working with children in local schools. \nWorking with carved wood\, painting\, and installation\, Tinkham creates forms that move between realism and abstraction. Through scale\, repetition\, and material tension\, his work transforms patterns found in nature into physical encounters that connect biological form with human emotion. Rather than depicting the natural world directly\, the work shifts familiar forms into psychologically charged states\, inviting viewers to reconsider how they perceive and relate to the living world. \nThe ecological fates of birds and humans are intertwined\,” he says. “I share specific stories of birds as a witness to natural and manmade change. Their fragile beauty and unsung voices become magnified so as not to be missed by the careless eye.”

SUMMARY:People-Nature-Art With Bird Author Lillian Stokes
DESCRIPTION:In this engaging talk filled with beautiful photography\, Lillian Stokes will explore the many ways people connect with birds and nature\, whether birding\, photography\, bird-feeding\, art\, or even experiencing a spiritual and uplifting bond that can change one’s life and is open to all. The science of connecting has many new studies that tell us everyday encounters with birds result in less stress\, anxiety and depression. The profound value of connecting with birds and nature provides personal health and wellness benefits\, a greater appreciation and understanding of the creatures we share the planet with\, and fosters a desire to protect and conserve that which we love\, she says. \nLillian is an award-winning coauthor (with her late husband Don) and photographer of 35 Stokes Guides\, which have sold more than 6 million copies nationwide. Her latest guide is The Stokes Guide to Finches of the United States and Canada with coauthor Matthew A. Young\, which The American Birding Association chose as one of the Best Bird Books of 2024. She was also a producer\, videographer\, and co-host of two national PBS bird-watching TV series that were seen by about 40 million viewers. For more than 35 years\, she has educated the birding public\, giving keynote talks at birding festivals and organizations nationwide. \n“What\,” she asks “is the spark that ignites the fire that becomes the destiny of human-nature bonding? What is the moment in time and space\, like the long football pass that becomes the touchdown\, when you know in your soul you connect and are hooked?”
