In this talk\, astronomers John Meader and Shawn Laatsch\, along with Maine Master Naturalist Serena Sanborn\, will explain why dark skies matter and precisely what people can do to make a difference where they live. This program is presented in partnership with Dark Sky Maine the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)\, Maine Chapter.

SUMMARY:CCCE: 'Who Governs the Oceans? The Law of the Sea in a Shifting World Order' with Ezgi Yildiz
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, will welcome Ezgi Yildiz for a presentation about the modern law of the sea. This event will take place on Saturday\, November 7\, at 2:30 PM in the Picker Room. \nThis talk will trace how the modern law of the sea took shape\, what it has achieved\, and why it now faces growing strain. That strain is in the headlines\, from contested waters in the South China Sea and the Strait of Hormuz\, to piracy off the Somali coast\, to the emerging race for deep-seabed mining. During the presentation\, Yildiz will introduce each of these key points\, and will consider what it will take to keep the oceans peaceful\, prosperous\, and healthy in the decades to come. \nEzgi Yildiz is an Assistant Professor of Government at Bowdoin College and a Research Associate at the Global Governance Center of the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland. She received her Ph.D. in International Relations and International Law from the Geneva Graduate Institute in Geneva\, Switzerland. SUMMARY:Stress and Effective Coping as Our Climate Changes
DESCRIPTION:The Rockport Conservation Commission welcomes Professor Thomas Bateman to the Rockport Public Library for a talk about ways to improve our psychological well-being in the face of climate change. \nBateman notes that—with regard to climate change—scientific causes\, disasters\, and technical solutions receive the bulk of public attention and coverage. “We need to attend more\, and better\, to ourselves\,” asserts Bateman. “This includes climate stress and coping strategies\, which can strengthen both personal and community resilience.” \nThe program will explore customizing pro-climate actions in ways that 1) aren’t too costly\, 2) suit personal interests and skills\, 3) are satisfyingly impactful\, and 4) contribute to needed system changes. This talk will not be about personal carbon footprints. \nThomas S. Bateman\, D.B.A. is the Bank of America Professor Emeritus of Commerce at UVA McIntire School of Commerce. Bateman specializes in organizational behavior and strategic leadership. He conducts research on proactive behavior\, problem solving\, and job stress in organizational contexts and as behavioral challenges in the domain of climate change. \nLearn more at rockportlibrary.net.

SUMMARY:Avoiding AI: Questions\, Concerns\, and How to Opt Out
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI is being pushed by major technology companies and appearing on devices uninvited. Hannah Cyrus\, Digital Media Librarian at Bangor Public Library\, will cover the basics of how this technology works; why it is unreliable as a source of information; privacy\, environmental\, and other concerns associated with AI; and how everyday people can push back. If you are curious about how large language models and artificial intelligence work\, or mad that everything from ChatGPT to Microsoft’s Copilot to Google’s AI summaries and more seems to show up without you asking for it or being able to get rid of it\, join us to learn more and take control of your devices and your privacy.\nHannah Cyrus (she/her) works as a reference librarian in Bangor\, with a focus on technology instruction and digital privacy. Her work often centers around patrons concerned about their accounts or devices being compromised\, falling victim to predatory schemes\, or concerned by the ubiquitous creepiness of online surveillance capitalism. She is a member of the Library Freedom Project\, and recipient of the 2026 Jim Campbell Intellectual Freedom Award from the Maine Library Association.
