SUMMARY:Francis Hamabe's Maine: A Life in Art
DESCRIPTION:Castine Historical Society’s 2026 exhibition of Francis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art\, 17 School Street\, Castine\nCurated by Carl Little\, a curator\, art critic\, and friend of Hamabe\, Francis Hamabe’s Maine is a joyful exploration of an artist’s interpretation of Maine. Please check castinehistoricalsociety.org for dates and times or call 207-326-4118 \nFrancis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art explores the life and career of Francis Hamabe (1917 – 2002)\, who spent more than forty years living and working in Maine. Francis Hamabe’s Maine is truly a collaborative exhibition\, with nearly every object\, archival document\, and photograph loaned to us for this first-of-its-kind career retrospective of Hamabe. Curated by Carl Little\, a curator\, art critic\, and friend of Hamabe\, Francis Hamabe’s Maine is a joyful exploration of an artist’s interpretation of Maine. \nFrom Blue Hill to Castine to Machias\, Hamabe’s artworks are a love letter to Maine. Hamabe’s career as a graphic designer\, silkscreen artist\, painter\, cartoonist\, and puppeteer had a lasting impact on his adoptive state of Maine. This exhibition follows his early life as a Japanese American living in Orange\, New Jersey\, to his service in World War II and the aftermath of Japanese internment\, to his life as a working artist in downeast Maine. Hamabe cultivated a large network of friends and fellow artists\, creating a generational legacy for Maine’s artists. \nHamabe was constantly creating works. Whether they were silkscreen prints\, sumi ink drawings\, or large-scale paintings\, his artwork can be found all over the state and country. This exhibition features more than forty of his original artworks. He had a particularly large impact on the Blue Hill Peninsula through his art classes\, which he taught in both private homes and public locations\, including here in Castine. This exhibition includes several works of art done by his students in Castine\, and his lasting influence is apparent in these works.

SUMMARY:local poet Bea Gates reads from "The Burning Key" at the Sargentville Library
DESCRIPTION:To honor the Sargentville Library theme of “Legacy & Lore\,” local poet Beatrix Gates will talk about her ongoing progression as a poet-revealing community histories & praising mentors by reading new work and poems from “The Burning Key.” \nFrom Dana Delibovi: “Haunting\, smoldering love colors every page of…the poet’s new and selected poems\, spanning 50 years of glorious work. Gates\, well known as an activist poet\, refers clearly to LGBTQ+\, feminist\, and anti-war activism.” Praise from California Poet Laureate\, Lee Herrick: “This a precise\, unsentimental\, fully engaged poetics: women’s friendships\, a deep knowing\, praise. The Burning Key feels like a life or several lives or a museum of language. Expansive\, captivating\, stellar.” \nWe look forward to Beatrix Gates’ interpretation of “Legacy & Lore” as a meditation on hope as resistance and a testament to the communities and legacies that sustain intimate relationships and intergenerational social movements. \nBeatrix Gates’ The Burning Key\, New & Selected Poems (1973-2023)\, Thera Books\, includes poems from seven collections\, award-winning translations & uncollected poems. A MacDowell and Ucross fellow; NEA recipient as librettist for the opera\, “The Singing Bridge”; Maine Arts Commission Poetry Awardee and Finalist for MWPA Nonfiction chapbook\, judged by Melissa Febos\, she has had significant time in San Francisco and NYC with roots in Down East Maine. She is working on hybrid about lgbtq life in Maine from 1975 on. beatrixgates.org.

SUMMARY:Backyard Stewards Invasive Plant Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In Acadia National Park\, scientists and resource managers work hard to slow the spread of invasive plants. But plants don’t stop at park boundaries. These invasive species can be found all over Mount Desert Island\, from roadsides to landscaped gardens. \nSome of the most common invasive shrubs found in Acadia were introduced as ornamental plants and still thrive in landscaped yards and gardens across Mount Desert Island. One of the best things you can do to help stop the spread of invasive plants is to learn how to tell them apart from other plants. Become a Backyard Steward and join Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park Vegetation Manager\, Jesse Wheeler to learn techniques and tools for identifying these invasive plants in your own backyard.
