Please check castinehistoricalsociety.org for dates and times or call 207-326-4118 \nFrancis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art explores the life and career of Francis Hamabe (1917 – 2002)\, who spent more than forty years living and working in Maine. Francis Hamabe’s Maine is truly a collaborative exhibition\, with nearly every object\, archival document\, and photograph loaned to us for this first-of-its-kind career retrospective of Hamabe. Curated by Carl Little\, a curator\, art critic\, and friend of Hamabe\, Francis Hamabe’s Maine is a joyful exploration of an artist’s interpretation of Maine. \nFrom Blue Hill to Castine to Machias\, Hamabe’s artworks are a love letter to Maine. Hamabe’s career as a graphic designer\, silkscreen artist\, painter\, cartoonist\, and puppeteer had a lasting impact on his adoptive state of Maine. This exhibition follows his early life as a Japanese American living in Orange\, New Jersey\, to his service in World War II and the aftermath of Japanese internment\, to his life as a working artist in downeast Maine. Hamabe cultivated a large network of friends and fellow artists\, creating a generational legacy for Maine’s artists. \nHamabe was constantly creating works. Whether they were silkscreen prints\, sumi ink drawings\, or large-scale paintings\, his artwork can be found all over the state and country. This exhibition features more than forty of his original artworks. He had a particularly large impact on the Blue Hill Peninsula through his art classes\, which he taught in both private homes and public locations\, including here in Castine. This exhibition includes several works of art done by his students in Castine\, and his lasting influence is apparent in these works.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome back chef Nicholas Repenning and Pacific harvester Nathan Maxwell Cann for this series of workshop and culinary experiments in conjunction with our June Low Low Tides seaweed harvest workshop. \nJune 14: MISO EXPLORATIONS\nJune 15: KOJI EXPLORATIONS\nJune 16: INTERTIDAL KITCHEN\nJune 17: 2nd Annual Community Miso Making \nEach day consists of afternoon workshops followed by group dinner at Smithereen Farm. \nIn this suite of workshops\, we’ll deep dive into koji and miso as well as explore local umami makers in the region around us. From ancient and traditional practices to contemporary uses of these culinary tools\, let’s learn the mystical and practical wisdoms of umami! Hone your senses and open to the intimacy of taste and texture as we are guided by our other-than-human culinary and ecological partners. \nIntertidal Kitchen with Nathan Maxwell Cann\nA hands-on exploration of seaweed\, fermentation\, and the deep flavors of the shoreline\, moving from tidepool harvest to simple kitchen preparations. Participants work with dashi\, urchin gathering\, seaweed seasonings\, and koji-based techniques to understand how ecology\, process\, and taste converge into umami. \nSecond Annual Community Miso Making\nWe’ll open the miso we made at Smithereen last year and make a new batch to put away for a year. This annual tradition anchors us to our shared cultures and the flavors that only arrive when we invest time into our relationships with each other\, our culinary histories\, and the microbial world. Whether you’re returning to witness the transformation we initiated or joining for the first time\, we welcome you to our miso community. \nNathan Maxwell Cann is a Pacific harvester\, artist\, and food and beverage consultant based in Northern California. He leads workshops focused on coastal ecology\, seaweed\, and urchin management through initiatives including Flora & Fungi and the Usal Project. Nathan is also the co-chair of Kelp Fest in Mendocino\, where he collaborates with community members across disciplines to highlight the ecological and cultural significance of kelp and coastal food systems. \nNicholas Repenning is co founder of go-en fermented foods and acts as board member of Maine Ferments\, an educational non profit project here in Maine. His focus over the past decade has been commercially producing and experimenting with Japanese foods in his own fermentation laboratory. Utilizing these ancient food technologies\, Nicholas is enthusiastic to share all he has learned from these foods and the microbial partners that make it all happen.

After sketching\, we’ll meet back at the mural for a throw down (sharing of our sketches) at noon. Everyone is welcome! \nThe goal of urban sketching is to tell a story using any medium in any environment. It is a direct observation drawing that works to capture a moment in time and the energy of the scene. It can be a quick sketch or a detailed image of a complex site. The concert will be held on June 14\, 2026 at 4pm at The Strom Auditorium at Camden Hills Regional High School.\nBeyond the performance itself\, the chorus will present a community grant of $5\,000 to Come Spring Food Pantry\, a local organization working on the front lines of food insecurity gleaning surplus produce\, reducing food waste\, and serving neighbors with dignity.\nThe concert program draws on music that speaks to themes of equity\, compassion\, and community – from modern classics like Ysaye Barnwell’s Hope to choral versions of classic folks songs like David Mallett’s The Garden Song to contemporary pieces that reflect the world we live in like Crowded Table by the High Women. Special guest vocalists Michael Weferling and Willow Watts will perform. DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of our country’s 250th Anniversary\, The Penobscot Bay Singers will present a celebration of American and regional music for their 2026 Spring Concert\, “The Road Not Taken.” Especially featured on the program will be “Frostiana\,” a collection of poems by Robert Frost\, United States Poet Laureate of 1958\, set as a large-scale choral work composed by Randall Thompson. Pianist Ruth Gellsinger from Belfast will accompany the Singers for this set of pieces.\nThe concert will also include uplifting works by Rodgers and Hammerstein\, Irving Berlin\, Morten Lauridsen\, Leonard Bernstein\, and a sea shanty arranged by Maine’s own music educator and composer Gladys Pitcher. As has become the custom for Penobscot Bay Singers Spring Concerts\, there will be special solo performances as well\, including a work for cello performed by Kay Allen from Rockland.
