SUMMARY:Sandy Stream Old Forest Walk with BBWC
DESCRIPTION:Last cut in the mid- to late 1800s\, the Sandy Stream Forest in Unity is a relic of the past. Led by ecologist Aleta McKeage and Sebasticook Regional Land Trust board member Buck O’Herin\, we’ll look for signs that indicate older forests\, and we’ll take some tree measurements. Why is this so intriguing? In recent decades\, scientists have learned that older forests harbor a greater diversity of species than do forests that have been disturbed. The Sandy Stream Forest is on land owned by the Bowsprit Foundation\, and 104 acres will soon be protected as forever wild with a conservation easement held by Maine Farmland Trust. \nWe will meet at Crosby Brook Road behind MOFGA at the Hills to Sea Trail sign. Then we’ll carpool a short distance to the Sandy Stream crossing that requires easy\, shallow wading to cross.FMI: boherin1954@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Historical Cooking Demo: Pork a la Normandie
DESCRIPTION:Join Joseph Greeley\, docent at the Jonathan Fisher House and historical cooking enthusiast\, for an outdoor cooking demonstration of a historical recipe and technique. \nOn Saturday\, August 8\, Joe will be cooking up Pork a la Normandie\, a pork stew made with cider and apples\, As the name suggests\, this recipe originates in the Normandy region of France. The Fisher family probably would have just called it “pork stew with apples.” We know that the Fisher homestead raised pigs and had an apple orchard\, and this dish is inspired by a recipe in Hannah Glasse’s 1788 cookbook\, The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy\, a popular household text that Dolly Fisher likely would have used when feeding her large household. Stop by to see the process of interpreting the recipe and cooking with period techniques\, and enjoy samples when the food is complete! \nThe free cooking demo will begin at 1:00 PM and visitors are encouraged to watch and ask questions during the process. Tours of the interior of the Fisher House are available from 1:00-4:00 PM\, with a $10 suggested donation. Visitors are also welcome to self-tour the grounds and tool exhibit in the Slaven Barn on the property.

SUMMARY:How to Find Hidden History
DESCRIPTION:Much of history has been buried by the passage of time. Join writer and history researcher Avery Yale Kamila who will go over Moral Treason\, a paper she wrote for the Elizabeth Oakes Smith Society exploring 19th-century Maine author Oakes Smith’s early work as an editor and involvement in the previously unknown Portland Female Anti-Matrimonial Society of 1833 and the little-explored Portland Graham Riot of 1834. Kamila will then share information of how she uncovered details of these events and how audience members can use the techniques in their own searches for lost history and forgotten ancestors.
