The profound value of connecting with birds and nature provides personal health and wellness benefits\, a greater appreciation and understanding of the creatures we share the planet with\, and fosters a desire to protect and conserve that which we love\, she says. \nLillian is an award-winning coauthor (with her late husband Don) and photographer of 35 Stokes Guides\, which have sold more than 6 million copies nationwide. Her latest guide is The Stokes Guide to Finches of the United States and Canada with coauthor Matthew A. Young\, which The American Birding Association chose as one of the Best Bird Books of 2024. She was also a producer\, videographer\, and co-host of two national PBS bird-watching TV series that were seen by about 40 million viewers. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday October 6th\, 6:30 pm the Belfast Free Library presents a book launch and dramatic reading for Carolyn Locke’s release\, “Between Ray and Eva: A Memoir in Poetry.”\nLocal author Carolyn Locke and her children\, Alison and Jeffrey Locke\, will do a dramatic reading from this moving memoir inspired by ten months of daily letters exchanged between Carolyn’s parents beginning in April of 1938 when Ray contracted tuberculosis. \nThe collection offers intimate glimpses into the lives of two young people confronted with this deadly disease just six months after they were married. It is a testament to the love\, humor\, and generosity that carried them through their separation during the time of the Great Depression and the years leading up to the Second World War.\nFree and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase.

Free copies of the zine will be distributed at the start of the event\, and artwork will be displayed while our authors read from and discuss their entries with each other. \nWe are grateful to have worked with writers Samaa Abdurraqib\, Gary Rainford\, and Josie Sibara\, and artists Katherine Emery\, Jennifer Judd-McGee\, and Kaitlyn Miller. \nThis program is an Open Call Event of the 2026 Maine Lit Fest and was made possible through the support of the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:This free community event will bring together local professionals and community voices to raise awareness about domestic abuse and help our neighbors better understand how to recognize abuse\, support survivors\, and connect people with available resources. \nOur panelists will include: \nHillary Waterman\, PhD – Community Prevention Educator for Knox and Waldo Counties\, New Hope Midcoast\nMary Kamradt – Director of Operations\, Finding Our Voices\nRepresentative Valli Geiger – State Representative\nRev. Hyunmyung Aiden Seo – People’s United Methodist Church\nHolly – Peer Voice \nThis gathering is not simply for survivors of domestic abuse. We hope it will be a meaningful opportunity for the wider community to learn how we can pay closer attention to what may be happening around us and become more supportive and compassionate neighbors. \nFor those who cannot attend in person\, Zoom access will be available. Participants do not need to turn on their cameras or speak; they are welcome simply to listen and learn. \nThe in-person event will also be recorded for educational purposes. To protect the privacy of participants\, the faces and voices of attendees other than the presenters will be removed from the recording. \nA fellowship lunch will follow the event.
