DESCRIPTION:Working Loose presents On Balancing: Art in Suspension\, an exhibition bringing together seven artists whose work explores suspension\, movement\, equilibrium\, rhythm\, transformation\, and the subtle choreography between objects\, forces\, and space. This includes not only traditional mobiles but also works that embrace the hanging form\, kinetic movement\, delicate equilibrium\, responsive materials\, and sculptural expressions of interconnectedness. \nAt a moment when certainty often feels elusive\, mobiles remind us that instability is not necessarily disorder. They reveal beauty in adaptation\, responsiveness\, and change. Their slow choreography of movement encourages close observation and patience\, offering a counterpoint to the speed and distraction of contemporary life. In this way\, the mobile is not only a significant artistic form but also a compelling lens through which to consider the complexities of the present moment. Suspended between motion and stillness\, they offer a visual language for uncertainty\, adaptation\, connection\, and joy. Its works remind us that equilibrium can be dynamic\, that fragility can be a form of strength\, and that joy can be found in the continual work of finding our balance. \nThis exhibition is itself a collaboration—and a balancing act—between Working Loose founder Em Gift and longtime collaborator Lisa Foti-Straus. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our “first ever” week-long Youth Theatre Camp. This camp is centered on Smithereen Farm and Greenhorns’ Reversing Hall Agrarian Library and led by a group of young and highly motivated theatre professionals from New York and California who share our ethos of bioregionalism\, self determination and youth empowerment. \nAt the heart of the camp is holistic\, uninhibited creativity. In the incredible marine and riverine habitats of our area\, children will find natural inspiration to create their own theatrical performance about the eco-system. Your child will learn creative skills by helping build an artistic community and immersing themselves in an environment of rivers and bays\, of seas and beaches\, barrens\, and bogs.\nGuided by instructors with backgrounds in theatre\, clowning\, and education\, your child will learn the basic elements of theatre through daily acting\, singing\, movement\, and improv classes. Each day will be filled with outdoor excursions in which your child will integrate their learning by singing to the trees and dancing with the water. The day camp will culminate in a final showcase for friends and family — a student-driven show that utilizes an incredible handpainted underwater backdrop created by the Artists’ Rapid Response Team during the www.ForAlltheFish.org campaign earlier this spring.\nAll are welcome to join us for the performance at the end: a youth-led tale of the marine heritage\, comedy/tragedy\, prospects and particularities of this place and moment in time. Amidst theatrical instruction and show development\, students will learn about the ecological history of their area through guided study at Greenhorns Agrarian Library. We’ll learn from atlases\, field guides\, indigenous accounts of encounters with settlers\, from wild food cookbooks\, as well as many other formats. We’ll focus on cod\, pollock\, alewives\, sardines\, clams… all will inspire the costumes and set design.\nWant to bring the whole family? DESCRIPTION:Through painting\, printmaking\, sculpture\, mixed media and other forms\, participating artists explore the feminine as sacred\, powerful\, nurturing\, resilient\, sensual\, natural\, complicated and sometimes contradictory. The result is an exhibition that moves between ancient ideas of the goddess and contemporary experiences of womanhood\, motherhood\, nature\, identity and power. \nRather than asking artists to conform to a single interpretation of the theme\, Artsworth invited them to respond freely. The resulting work ranges from the intimate and personal to the mythological\, political and playful. \nOh My Goddess opens Friday\, September 19\, with a public reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Artsworth\, 25 Pine Street in Ellsworth. The exhibition continues through October 24. \nThe opening will also launch an Artsworth silent-auction fundraiser\, featuring fine art\, jewelry\, blown glass\, pottery and other work. The auction will continue through Maine Craft Weekend and conclude October 3 at 4 p.m. \nArtsworth is a community arts organization in Ellsworth dedicated to bringing professional and aspiring artists together through exhibitions\, workshops\, artist talks\, performances and creative gatherings. Its programming is designed to encourage connection\, experimentation and participation in the arts within the greater Ellsworth community.

DESCRIPTION:SEARSPORT\, Maine — More than two dozen musicians will gather at the Searsport Town Hall Theatre Saturday\, Sept. 19\, for an evening of traditional music followed by a community contra dance. \nThe 6:30 p.m. program is part of Strung Together: A Maine String Band Weekend\, a three-day gathering of musicians and music lovers at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground. \nPerformers include Owen Marshall and the Wooden Nickels\, Alden Robinson\, Twitchell Hill Fiddleheads\, Skip Gorman\, Laura Feddersen and Joel Wennerstrom\, Torrin Ryan and Amy Law\, and Jon Kerr. \nSeveral ensembles formed especially for the evening will also perform\, including The Mandolin Team\, with Dan Simons\, Stan D’Aubin\, Dan Sowder and Tom Fowler; The Fiddling Gang\, with George Fowler\, John Pranio\, James Hyland\, Bob Hammond and Jim Burke; and Guitar Pros\, with Fred White\, Art Bryan and Will Brown. \nFollowing the performances\, Pat Dancsen will call a traditional contra dance. No previous contra dance experience is necessary. The caller will teach the dances and guide participants throughout the evening. \nRather than featuring a single headlining act\, the program celebrates the tradition of musicians gathering and playing together. Fiddle tunes\, bluegrass\, old-time music\, mandolin\, guitar and traditional dance music will fill the historic Searsport Town Hall. \nMusic That Gives Back \nAdmission is by suggested donation of $20. \nProceeds will support musician scholarships for Strung Together and the instrument-lending program at the Searsport Carver Memorial Library\, which gives community members an opportunity to borrow instruments and try making music themselves. \nThe event is sponsored by the Makers Guild of Maine and Belfast Flying Shoes.\nStrung Together organizers say the Saturday evening gathering reflects the larger purpose of the weekend: bringing people together through music\, dancing and traditions that have long been part of Maine’s musical culture.
