DESCRIPTION:Teens and Tweens are invited to the Blue Hill Public Library to join “Skein Stitchers\,” a youth fiber arts group\, every Monday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. starting September 14. Participants can hang out in the Y.A. area to work on knitting\, crochet\, sewing\, embroidery\, or other fiber projects\, while socializing and sharing their projects. All experience levels are welcome. Experienced participants are welcome to bring projects with them to work on\, and there will be materials available for new projects or beginners wanting to learn how to knit or crochet. Teen Services Librarian Kendall Chapman and volunteers Arlee Morris and Alison Rudel will be available to teach participants the basics\, new stitches\, or answer questions about knitting and crochet. \nThis free program is sponsored by the library thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library. DESCRIPTION:The Jonathan Fisher House of Blue Hill will host our annual celebration of the arrival of autumn and the end of our tour season at the House on Sunday\, October 11 from noon to 2:00 PM. Join us for activities\, live music\, and refreshments\, bring your apples and other fruit to add to our community cider-pressing\, and take a turn at the press at this free\, outdoor\, family-friendly event. \nPear and apple cider will be pressed on-site from the blue-ribbon winning pears planted by Jonathan Fisher as early as 1805\, as well as apples from our orchard and donated fruit from around the peninsula. \nAdditionally\, there will be guided tours of the reconstructed historic orchard\, highlighting Fisher’s original design and planting\, as well as the process of re-establishing the orchard twenty years ago based on the documented apple varieties from Fisher’s original orchard map. \nThis event is open to the public and free of charge\, though donations are always welcome to support the Fisher House.

SUMMARY:reWorks: A Collaborative Literary Art Project
DESCRIPTION:A live reading\, art viewing and panel discussion celebrating the ways creative ideas echo across mediums. We commissioned three authors to write a short piece inspired by this year’s Maine Lit Fest theme – “responding to the moment” – then commissioned three artists to reinterpret their work visually\, for publication in a limited-run reWorks zine! Free copies of the zine will be distributed at the start of the event\, and artwork will be displayed while our authors read from and discuss their entries with each other. \nWe are grateful to have worked with writers Samaa Abdurraqib\, Gary Rainford\, and Josie Sibara\, and artists Katherine Emery\, Jennifer Judd-McGee\, and Kaitlyn Miller. \nThis program is an Open Call Event of the 2026 Maine Lit Fest and was made possible through the support of the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday October 6th\, 6:30 pm the Belfast Free Library presents a book launch and dramatic reading for Carolyn Locke’s release\, “Between Ray and Eva: A Memoir in Poetry.”\nLocal author Carolyn Locke and her children\, Alison and Jeffrey Locke\, will do a dramatic reading from this moving memoir inspired by ten months of daily letters exchanged between Carolyn’s parents beginning in April of 1938 when Ray contracted tuberculosis. \nThe collection offers intimate glimpses into the lives of two young people confronted with this deadly disease just six months after they were married. It is a testament to the love\, humor\, and generosity that carried them through their separation during the time of the Great Depression and the years leading up to the Second World War.\nFree and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase.

DESCRIPTION:In this engaging talk filled with beautiful photography\, Lillian Stokes will explore the many ways people connect with birds and nature\, whether birding\, photography\, bird-feeding\, art\, or even experiencing a spiritual and uplifting bond that can change one’s life and is open to all. The science of connecting has many new studies that tell us everyday encounters with birds result in less stress\, anxiety and depression. The profound value of connecting with birds and nature provides personal health and wellness benefits\, a greater appreciation and understanding of the creatures we share the planet with\, and fosters a desire to protect and conserve that which we love\, she says. \nLillian is an award-winning coauthor (with her late husband Don) and photographer of 35 Stokes Guides\, which have sold more than 6 million copies nationwide. Her latest guide is The Stokes Guide to Finches of the United States and Canada with coauthor Matthew A. Young\, which The American Birding Association chose as one of the Best Bird Books of 2024. She was also a producer\, videographer\, and co-host of two national PBS bird-watching TV series that were seen by about 40 million viewers. For more than 35 years\, she has educated the birding public\, giving keynote talks at birding festivals and organizations nationwide. \n“What\,” she asks “is the spark that ignites the fire that becomes the destiny of human-nature bonding? What is the moment in time and space\, like the long football pass that becomes the touchdown\, when you know in your soul you connect and are hooked?”

DESCRIPTION:Teens and Tweens are invited to the Blue Hill Public Library to join “Skein Stitchers\,” a youth fiber arts group\, every Monday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. starting September 14. Participants can hang out in the Y.A. area to work on knitting\, crochet\, sewing\, embroidery\, or other fiber projects\, while socializing and sharing their projects. All experience levels are welcome. Experienced participants are welcome to bring projects with them to work on\, and there will be materials available for new projects or beginners wanting to learn how to knit or crochet.
