SUMMARY:Coastal Kids Science Series - Build a Filter Feeder
DESCRIPTION:Kids are invited to join Tess from the University of Maine 4-H at the Blue Hill Public Library on Wednesday\, October 14 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for a creative experiment that shows how bivalves keep our oceans healthy while trying to find a meal. Take on the role of a filter feeder—just like an oyster! Using common household objects\, kids will test how well different gills can filter particles from water. Along the way\, they’ll discover how filter feeders clean the ocean and deal with things they don’t want to eat. \nUMaine Cooperative Extension is your doorway to University of Maine expertise. Coastal Kids Science Series with 4-H is a monthly program where youth can dive deep into the natural wonder of water. This program is free and cosponsored by the library and the UMaine Cooperative Extension. For more information\, contact Pat at pat@bhpl.net or call 374-5515.

SUMMARY:Camden Opera House's Blue Café: Abbie Gardner
DESCRIPTION:Named a “triple threat” by Bluegrass Unlimited\, ABBIE GARDNER has made a name for herself as one of the the only solo dobro troubadours in the country. Don’t let her infectious smile fool you\, beneath that radiant exterior lies the soul of a fierce and fiery slide guitar player. You might know her best from her work with Americana darlings Red Molly\, but Abbie Gardner centered her own gritty\, sweet tales of love and loss on her 2022 solo album DobroSinger. It reached #11 on the Billboard Blues chart. She’s a Kerrville New Folk Finalist (2025) and was nominated for Folk Alliance International’s Artist of the Year (2025). Her live show is truly unique – heartfelt vocals and warm stage presence\, backed up by top notch picking on an instrument that is more typically in the background. Come for the heartfelt\, intimate ballads and stay for the raw\, bluesy picking. Gardner’s got all your musical bases covered. \nBlue Café shows are free to the public and are supported by donations to the Community Arts Fund. Seating is limited. Doors open at 7:00pm at 29 Elm Street; take the elevator to the 3rd floor. FMI\, call 207-236-3154.

SUMMARY:The Power of Thin Places
DESCRIPTION:Explore this Celtic concept with New York Times bestselling writer Eric Weiner. He’s traveled the world in an effort to discover places where heaven and earth seem to collapse together and people find themselves transformed. Name a thin place? Disney World is not one. Neither is Cancun. But what about Powell’s Bookstore? The Empty Quarter in Oman? Perhaps\, he says\, a thin place shows us earth as it really is\, unencumbered. \nThis program is offered through Shannaghe\, Belfast’s residency for writers and environmentalists\, and Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition.

DESCRIPTION:Returning to cinemas for the first time in over a decade\, Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II in the Olivier and Tony Award®-winning hit production\, directed by Stephen Daldry. \nFor 60 years\, Queen Elizabeth II met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. From Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron\, the Queen advised her prime ministers on matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences\, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch. \nPeter Morgan’s Netflix phenomenon The Crown was based on this hit play which was captured live from London’s West End in 2013 and went on to become one of the most-watched NT Live productions. \nAdult $18 | Senior $13 | Student $11 | All fees included

SUMMARY:Maine Coast Men Biannual Gathering in Lincolnville
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the biannual Maine Coast Men men’s weekend retreat on Friday night to Sunday afternoon\, October 16 to 18\, 2026\, at Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville. The program is coordinated\, led and supported entirely by participants. \nJoin us\, as a community of men\, for a weekend retreat of sharing and support. We welcome all self-identified men with respect and good will to be part of Maine Coast Men. The theme of the May weekend is “Movement is Life.” \nMany of us\, both young and old\, often find ourselves restrained in some way as we become more inactive\, tired\, and low on energy. To counter this tendency various forms of movement therapies and practices can help us become more flexible\, open\, vibrant\, happy\, and healthy while being less stagnant\, weak\, and stationary. We all want to thrive and not just survive as we age. \nKeeping a flow of movement is an integral and necessary part of life. It comes in many forms on different energetic levels. It includes not only physical movements that help release tension\, improve our circulation\, posture\, and stamina\, but many ways to regenerate the subtle energy body. On one hand you have physically active practices like walking\, stretching\, dancing\, swimming\, posture bodywork\, somatic practices\, contact improv\, aquatic therapies\, and massage. On the other hand\, you have forms of movement that involve breathing\, sound vibrations\, heat therapy\, laughter\, kinetic practices\, singing\, yoga\, chi gong\, martial arts\,and other ways of activating vital energies that help us move the breath\, feelings\, emotions\, and thoughts while expanding our awareness and transforming our spiritual sense of wellbeing. Many of these practices can be done alone or in a group and are well worth exploring. \nTo protect our fellow men\, we require attendees to take a COVID test when you arrive for the weekend. After a negative result\, you may proceed to the main lodge. Appropriate masks are strongly encouraged inside. Social distancing outside. Don’t come if you have been exposed to someone with COVID or have COVID symptoms. \nFriday night’s meal is a potluck. All other meals are planned and prepared by a volunteer crew. Everyone contributes by cooking\, washing dishes\, moving firewood and tending wood stoves. Saturday workshops are put on by participants on a variety of topics. \nSaturday night will feature a variety show\, where men who want to “can show off what they know\, or maybe have fun with what they don’t.” \nCost is $100 for the entire weekend and $40 for Saturday only. Support can be arranged for those who have special needs. MCM offers any new attendee to come for free\, partial payment or pay the full fee if you choose. Advance registration is required; for more information\, and to register online\, visit www.mainecoastmen.net. To talk with the registrar\, contact Tom Beal at registrar@mainecoastmen.net or 207-669-0008.

SUMMARY:Rockport Opera House presents Mythic Heart Theatre A Feast For The Soul
DESCRIPTION:A Feast for the Soul with Mythic Heart Theatre\nOctober 16 7pm and October 18 2pm\nGather.\nDream.\nRemember. \nAs autumn deepens and the leaves turn\, the outer world grows quieter while the inner world awakens. \nMythic Heart Theatre offers A Feast for the Soul—an experience of seasonal transition\, created to kindle our inner flame and open a space for wonder. \nPerformance artist Kristi Williamson brings mythical figures to life\, guiding us through a tapestry of dance\, song\, and poetry. Accompanied by guest cellist Robin Lane\, the performance draws on wisdom that reaches across time—from the ancient poetry of Rumi and sacred song to contemporary explorations of what it means to be human. \nFilm projections and masks by Kathryn Oliver transform the stage into a dreamscape. Works by visual artists Joyce Tenneson and Joan Proudman are woven into the projections. \nThroughout the performance\, audiences are invited to participate from their seats through singing\, gentle movement\, and shared moments of connection. All participation is optional. Culminating with a closing community offering honoring the seasonal change and an ode to the soul. \nAbout Mythic Heart Theatre \nMythic Heart Theatre is a collaboration between performance artist Kristi Williamson and visual artist Kathryn Oliver. SUMMARY:Food from the Sea Talks with Brooklin Food Corps
DESCRIPTION:How does the seafood we enjoy get to our table? Most of us don’t know much\, if anything\, about how it moves from our local waters and shores to the grocery stores’ and fish purveyors’ refrigerated cases. This series of talks will unpack the process of harvesting food from the sea. Our three speakers are local residents whose work has attracted national attention: David Tarr\, scalloper\, lobsterman\, and policy advisor\, October 3rd; Abby Barrows (Deer Isle Oyster Co.)\, oyster farmer and marine scientist\, October 10th; and Micah Woodcock (Atlantic Holdfast Seaweed Co.)\, seaweed harvester and policy advisor\, October 17th. Each will share their unique perspective: What are the fishing and harvesting seasons? How do weather\, environmental concerns\, and other considerations affect the ability to catch or harvest? What are the distribution channels? What makes our area unique? How will this work change in the future? Come and connect with those doing the work and learn about how they do it\, the challenges\, the rewards\, and the ways this hyper-local work links to broader issues. Free and open to all (1 Reach Road\, Brooklin).
