SUMMARY:Underwater Opera Youth Theatre Camp
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our “first ever” week-long Youth Theatre Camp. This camp is centered on Smithereen Farm and Greenhorns’ Reversing Hall Agrarian Library and led by a group of young and highly motivated theatre professionals from New York and California who share our ethos of bioregionalism\, self determination and youth empowerment. \nAt the heart of the camp is holistic\, uninhibited creativity. In the incredible marine and riverine habitats of our area\, children will find natural inspiration to create their own theatrical performance about the eco-system. Your child will learn creative skills by helping build an artistic community and immersing themselves in an environment of rivers and bays\, of seas and beaches\, barrens\, and bogs.\nGuided by instructors with backgrounds in theatre\, clowning\, and education\, your child will learn the basic elements of theatre through daily acting\, singing\, movement\, and improv classes. Each day will be filled with outdoor excursions in which your child will integrate their learning by singing to the trees and dancing with the water. The day camp will culminate in a final showcase for friends and family — a student-driven show that utilizes an incredible handpainted underwater backdrop created by the Artists’ Rapid Response Team during the www.ForAlltheFish.org campaign earlier this spring.\nAll are welcome to join us for the performance at the end: a youth-led tale of the marine heritage\, comedy/tragedy\, prospects and particularities of this place and moment in time. Amidst theatrical instruction and show development\, students will learn about the ecological history of their area through guided study at Greenhorns Agrarian Library. We’ll learn from atlases\, field guides\, indigenous accounts of encounters with settlers\, from wild food cookbooks\, as well as many other formats. We’ll focus on cod\, pollock\, alewives\, sardines\, clams… all will inspire the costumes and set design.\nWant to bring the whole family? We can help you find accommodations if needed. \nUnderwater Opera is designed for youth ages 7-13 and meets during the day only. Cost is $640 for the full week which includes lunch.

University of Maine and Public Programs and Volunteer Manager at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). \nAs the autumn winds increase and the days shorten\, Acadia experiences waves of migrating sea and shore birds\, warblers\, and raptors\, an annual phenomenon that provides an opportunity to consider human relationships with birds. In this panel discussion\, Dr. Bonnie Newsom will present on Wabanaki cultural associations with birds. These stories are grounded in gifts and creations Wabanaki ancestors left behind in shell mounds\, and Olivia Olson will share her analysis of bird-related materials recovered from cultural heritage spaces in and beyond Acadia. Our understanding has changed remarkably over the centuries thanks to progress in astronomy\, astrophysics and observing technology. \nThis visually enhanced presentation will focus on key moments in those centuries of progress\, which include the Earth-centered universe of the ancient world; Copernicus’s Sun-centered revolution; the revelations of Galileo’s wonderful telescope; physical laws revealed by Newton and Kepler; how we’ve learned to measure the vast distances of space; and Edwin Hubble’s breakthrough discoveries\, which have greatly expanded our measure of the universe. \nWe will meet in Moore Auditorium on Schoodic Institute’s campus. In the incredible marine and riverine habitats of our area\, children will find natural inspiration to create their own theatrical performance about the eco-system. Your child will learn creative skills by helping build an artistic community and immersing themselves in an environment of rivers and bays\, of seas and beaches\, barrens\, and bogs.\nGuided by instructors with backgrounds in theatre\, clowning\, and education\, your child will learn the basic elements of theatre through daily acting\, singing\, movement\, and improv classes. Each day will be filled with outdoor excursions in which your child will integrate their learning by singing to the trees and dancing with the water. The day camp will culminate in a final showcase for friends and family — a student-driven show that utilizes an incredible handpainted underwater backdrop created by the Artists’ Rapid Response Team during the www.ForAlltheFish.org campaign earlier this spring.\nAll are welcome to join us for the performance at the end: a youth-led tale of the marine heritage\, comedy/tragedy\, prospects and particularities of this place and moment in time. Amidst theatrical instruction and show development\, students will learn about the ecological history of their area through guided study at Greenhorns Agrarian Library. We’ll learn from atlases\, field guides\, indigenous accounts of encounters with settlers\, from wild food cookbooks\, as well as many other formats. We’ll focus on cod\, pollock\, alewives\, sardines\, clams… all will inspire the costumes and set design.\nWant to bring the whole family?
