SUMMARY:Bob Duchesne presents Maine is Weird
DESCRIPTION:Birding expert and guide\, environmentalist\, and author Bob Duchesne will speak at Hammond Hall on Wednesday\, June 17 at 1:00 pm on the topic Why Maine Is Weird\, in a birding sense. The event is sponsored by the Winter Harbor Public Library.\nDuchesne will detail why Maine is different from every other state\, with its geological history\, its long coastline\, its forests—to name a few—that makes it a great place to birdwatch and explains why it has the birds it does.\nBob Duchesne became interested in birds in the first grade. That interest grew into a passion. After a 31-year career in radio\, Bob Duchesne retired and went on to serve six terms in the Maine House of Representatives\, chairing the Environment and Natural Resources Committee\, and later the Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Committee. In 2009\, he started his own guiding business\, the Maine Birding Trail\, and published the book\, Maine Birding Trail: The Official Guide to More than 260 Accessible Sites. Today\, Duchesne is a chapter board member and frequent field trip leader for Maine Audubon. He writes a weekly birding column for the Bangor Daily News and produces YouTube videos about birding in Maine and beyond. A frequent visitor to the Schoodic Peninsula\, you might catch him watching for seabirds at Acadia National Park/Schoodic in the winter months. For information on his birding guides or videos\, visit his website at https://mainebirdingtrail.com/.\nWinter Harbor Public Library is located at 18 Chapel Lane in Winter Harbor. Hammond Hall is at 427 Main St.\, Winter Harbor. Parking is available along Main Street or at the library\, which is within walking distance of the Hall.

SUMMARY:VoXX: Voice of Twenty presents Musical Miracles
DESCRIPTION:The auditioned Midcoast a cappella vocal ensemble VoXX: Voice of Twenty presents its summer concert series\, Musical Miracles\, led by Music Director John Mehrmann. The concerts will be held in four Midcoast venues over the last two weekends in June. \nMany may feel in need of some miracles these days\, so VoXX has chosen to feature works that span a wide range of the miraculous for this concert series. Songs both sacred and secular\, large and small\, celebrate the miracles of nature\, of love\, and of God. \nPurcell’s In these delightful pleasant groves depicts the ever-miraculous return of “cheerful Spring.” Orlando Gibbons’s The Silver Swan and Jakob Arkadelt’s Il bianco e dolce cigno meditate on the beautiful dying song of a heretofore voiceless swan. Pieces by Mozart\, Byrd\, and Francisco López Capillas speak of the miracle of the Resurrection\, while works by Josquin\, Lassus\, and Gjeilo marvel at the promise of mercy. Jonah’s Prayer\, by VoXX Music Director John Mehrmann\, is a hopeful retelling of Jonah’s escape from his fishy prison. Two other contemporary pieces–When the Earth Stands Still\, by Don Macdonald\, and The Peace of Wild Things\, a setting of a Wendell Berry poem by Matthew J. Olson–offer promise of the hope and peace to be found in the nature. These are all miracles\, caught and celebrated in gorgeous music from the 1500s to the present century.
