McCarthy and Pratt are veteran folk and blues performers who have played across the US including The Newport Folk Festival and he Falcon Ridge Festivals as well as on the stages of the major acoustic venues in the US. Their last area performance sold out well in advance so they are pleased to be playing a larger venue this time. Each will play solo pieces as well as accompanying each other on a number of songs.

DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has been watching Ken Burns’ most recent documentary will recognize Dr. Taylor as the main “talking head” in the documentary. Dr. Taylor is a local guy\, who graduated Colby College before finding fame as a historian. He has authored 11 books dealing with Maine and American history\, including “Liberty Men and Great Proprietors: The Revolutionary Settlement on the Maine Frontier\, 1760–1820” and “The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens\, British Subjects\, Irish Rebels\, and Indian Allies” with the first being entirely and the second being in large part about Maine’s history. Alan Taylor’s talk will be about Joseph Plumb Martin\, a common soldier of the Revolution who settled after the war in Stockton Springs and wrote a vivid memoir about life as a common soldier.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library and Blue Hill Historical Society will present a talk with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Mainer Alan Taylor on Saturday\, July 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s Pearson Room. Taylor’s talk will examine the experiences of a young Continental Soldier in the American Revolutionary War\, Joseph Plumb Martin\, who wrote the only book-length memoir of a soldier’s experiences in that war. \nAlan Taylor grew up in Maine and is a graduate of Colby College (1977) with a doctorate in American History from Brandeis University (1986). Taylor has published eleven books\, two of which have won the Pulitzer Prize. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Join us for a hands-on introduction to the iNaturalist mobile app\, an online tool for exploring and documenting plants\, animals\, fungi\, and overall biodiversity. \nConnect with nature and learn how to use iNaturalist to share your observations! By submitting everyday sightings of plants\, animals\, and other wildlife\, you’ll contribute to a global database that scientists around the world\, including those at Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park\, use to monitor biodiversity. \nDuring this 2-hour program\, you will be introduced to iNaturalist and its role in citizen science efforts. You’ll learn the basic functions of the app on your smartphone and use it to engage in a bioblitz\, a community event where participants record as many species as possible within a specific area and time frame. \nThis program blends a mix of outdoor exploration with indoor classroom time. All outdoor activity will be on easy\, paved walking paths\, with optional off-trail activity based on participants’ comfort level. Please dress accordingly – we recommend sunscreen\, light layers\, and sturdy shoes. We also suggest bringing water\, snacks\, and your smartphone with iNaturalist downloaded (if possible); all other gear will be provided by Schoodic Institute.
