SUMMARY:Protecting Maine’s Dark Skies
DESCRIPTION:A dark night sky is about more than just beautiful views—it’s essential for wildlife\, human health\, and our sense of wonder! Because of Maine’s vast swaths of uninhabited forestland\, the state has some of the darkest\, clearest night skies east of the Mississippi River. In this talk\, astronomers John Meader and Shawn Laatsch\, along with Maine Master Naturalist Serena Sanborn\, will explain why dark skies matter and precisely what people can do to make a difference where they live. This program is presented in partnership with Dark Sky Maine the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)\, Maine Chapter.

SUMMARY:Beginning Birding Class with Craig Kesselheim
DESCRIPTION:Have you wished you knew more about the birds you’re seeing? This course is designed as a welcoming on-ramp to bird observation. No experience needed. \nEach of our four classes will include: a helpful identification segment (water birds\, birds of prey\, feeder birds\, warblers\, for example); a broader topic like migration\, or how to find birds by season and habitat; and a user’s tip for eBird or Merlin — two free online tools that birders find invaluable. There will be time for questions\, too. Sessions run about an hour and fifteen minutes. \nClasses meet four Wednesdays starting November 4 (skipping Thanksgiving week) from 6:30–7:45 p.m. Eastern\, via Zoom. One optional local field trip will also be offered – date and location TBD – for those who want to put their new skills to work outdoors. Binoculars are nice to have but not required. \nAbout the instructor: Craig Kesselheim is a lifelong birder and longtime MDI resident who has taught Observing Birds for MDI Adult Education in previous years. A retired educator\, Craig guides annually with the Acadia Birding Festival and loves sharing his passion for birds with anyone curious enough to look up … or sideways. \nParticipants are welcome from anywhere on the continent.

SUMMARY:MIAQC Mold & Moisture in Buildings Conference
DESCRIPTION:Sooner or later\, every homeowner\, building owner\, or facility manager faces a moisture problem—a roof leak\, a flooded basement\, a plumbing failure\, or high indoor humidity. Then come the questions: Is there mold? Will it harm occupant health? Is testing worth it? What needs to be removed—and who should you trust? The answers aren’t always clear-cut. \nMold investigation and remediation involve judgment calls\, and conflicting advice can leave you wondering what to do next. Join us at the Mold & Moisture in Buildings Conference on November 5 to learn how to ask the right questions\, evaluate your options\, and respond with confidence.
