SUMMARY:Jonathan Lowder’s Truckhouse\, 1776-1779: History and Archaeology of a Revolutionary War Trading Post\, with Chip Lagerbom
DESCRIPTION:The series of programs\, “Revolutionary Belfast” continues at the Belfast Free Library continues with this talk with author and AP U.S. History teacher Charles H. “Chip” Lagerbom. \nIn this illustrated presentation Lagerbom will describe the discovery and history of Jonathan Lowder’s Truckhouse which was built along the banks of Penobscot River near present-day Veazie. he Truckhouse site was discovered in the summer of 1988\, while actually searching for a different colonial site. This is the story of early mid-Maine colonial history and a war-time Truckhouse right here in our backyard. \nCharles H. “Chip” Lagerbom received his B.A. in History from Kansas State University and M.A. in History and Archaeology from University of Maine at Orono with the excavation and analysis of a Revolutionary War Truckhouse or trading post. An avid diver\, Charles has organized shipwreck surveys in Maine lakes\, the 1779 Penobscot Expedition and the 17th century English galleon Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid. He travels to and speaks frequently on topics regarding Antarctica\, Cape Horn\, Maine whaling and New England colonial and maritime history.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Professor Liam Riordan\, “What Should We Remember about the Declaration of Independence?”
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated lecture sets the 250th commemoration of the American Revolution in both a historical and contemporary context. What did the Declaration of Independence mean in 1776? Equally important\, what should it mean to us today?\nLiam Riordan is Department Chair and Adelaide and Alan Bird Professor of History at the University of Maine. He is a specialist on the American Revolution and has a book project about loyalists\, those who opposed the rebellion that created the United States. In 2020 he received the Maine Historical Society’s Neal W. Allen History Award for outstanding contributions to Maine history.\nThis lecture is part of the Revolutionary Belfast Series of programs at the Belfast Free Library to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and leading up to a display of a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence August 13-15 in the Abbott Room.\nFor more information about the series and to sign up for a time to view the Declaration visit belfastlibrary.org/revolutionary-belfast.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Belfast Free Library and the Wawenoc Chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society on Wednesday\, June 17 at 2pm in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library for a genealogy presentation called “Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Lives.” \nLocal genealogist and author Dana Murch will present a program chronicling 200 years of the Murch Family in Belfast. The program will include stories about the Mayflower\, the War of 1812\, pump and block-making\, lawyers and judges\, postmasters\, Gettysburg\, poetry\, ice-making\, hydro-electric power generation\, shoe shops\, the Pygmy Circus\, and World War II–along with a generous dose of Belfast history. \nThis event is free and open to the public. The Wawenoc Chapter is the Belfast area’s chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society. It meets monthly on the third Wednesday at the Belfast Free Library.
