SUMMARY:Damn\, Girls & Hella Band: Spooky Shenanigans Fundraiser & Dance
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library and H.O.M.E. Co-op invite everyone to join in spooky shenanigans at a special fundraiser concert and dance by Hancock County’s premiere country western girl band\, the Damn\, Girls! on Friday\, October 30\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Blue Hill Public Library. The Damn\, Girls! are Amy Grant\, Sally Mills\, Kim Parrott\, and Lori Sitzabee. They will be backed up by the excellent Hella Band\, and a brass horn duet. This family friendly event is made possible by Camden National Bank and Downeast Graphics & Printing\, with beverages generously provided by Fogtown Brewing. \nThis year’s theme is the “Monster Mash” so we encourage everyone to get into the spirit of things and come in costume. The band particularly welcomes Dolly Parton-inspired looks and impersonators in honor of the late singer. And like previous years there will be a Halloween-themed photo booth set up for everyone to take memorable pictures. \nAdvance tickets for this event are available on www.eventbrite.com and at the library. There are two tiers of tickets: regular and benefactor. Regular tickets are $20 per person or $50 per household\, while Benefactor tickets\, which get you a photo op with the Damn\, Girls!\, are $50 per person or $100 per household. Tickets purchased on the day of the event will be $5 more. All proceeds benefit H.O.M.E Co-op and the Blue Hill Public Library. \nIn advance of last year’s concert\, a number of people paid it forward and bought tickets on behalf of those who might wish to attend the event but for whom the ticket cost is a barrier. We welcome folks paying it forward again this year. \nThere will be a selection of Fogtown beer\, non-alcoholic drinks\, and sweet and savory snacks. The Black Sheep food truck will also be on site with a selection of comforting and savory meals to choose from. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. For more information call the library at 374-5515.

SUMMARY:A Continuation of “Color” by Susan Finsen
DESCRIPTION:Susan Finsen’s colorful pottery will continue to be on display for the month of October in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Howard Room Glass Cases. Composed of unique vases\, platters\, and “Leggy Whatnots\,” Susan’s exhibit pushes viewers to consider how deeply color influences what we see\, remember\, and enjoy. Susan says that\, for the last few years\, clay hand-building (not using a pottery wheel) has been her medium of choice\, providing unlimited opportunities for play and spontaneity and producing unexpected organic forms and surfaces. \nThe show will be available for viewing through October 30\, subject to the Howard Room meeting schedule. For more information\, contact the library at 374-5515.

SUMMARY:"Honoring Frank:" The Artwork of Francis Hamabe Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library will present\, “Honoring Frank\,” a comprehensive exhibit at the Blue Hill Public Library of the works of Francis Hamabe (1917-2002)\, beginning with prints created in the 1940s while he was overseas during World War II\, until his last drawings\, made from a hospital bed in 2002. “Honoring Frank” will open on August 3rd and continue to the 29th. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday\, August 7th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The special exhibit is presented in conjunction with the Castine Historical Society\, which is hosting “Francis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art” through October 12. \nWorks on display will include cartoons\, cubist style paintings\, abstract works\, painted ceramics\, silkscreens on nautical charts\, and posters. Frank was multifaceted as he worked fluidly between his varied styles depicting images of Blue Hill\, his home for 47 years\, and coastal and eastern Maine towns from Camden to Bangor to Machias in watercolors and prints. \nThe artists Hamabe most admired were Stuart Davis\, Alexander Calder\, and John Marin\, whose influence is evident in Hamabe’s recurring themes of harbor views\, fishing boats\, churches\, Maine villages\, and children playing. His work was also rooted in both Japanese and Swedish cultures\, reflecting his own heritage. His later calligraphic images leap off the page in exuberant color with gestural movement\, while his line drawings of village life are reminiscent of Scandinavian folk designs. \nMany of the works included in the exhibit are on loan from private collectors\, some of whom worked with him at the University of Maine in Orono when he was the director for the Maine Public radio station. Down East Magazine covers\, greeting cards\, notes\, and the leather satchel he used to carry his painting supplies will be on view. There will be a selection of prints and paintings for sale with part of the proceeds benefiting the library. \nAccompanying the exhibit is a catalogue featuring items culled from the library’s Hamabe archives\, donated by his widow\, Phyllis Hamabe\, in 2012. These items touch on his early years in Orange\, New Jersey where he was born and raised\, the son of a Japanese immigrant father and Swedish immigrant mother. Photographs document his time as an enlisted medic in the US Army and later as the first art teacher at the Farnsworth Museum. Also included are press clippings from his puppet performances\, his 1996 honorary degree from the University of Maine at Machias\, and recollections from students\, colleagues\, and friends who knew him best. \nFrank was an artist of extraordinary kindness and generosity\, who loved his family\, friends\, and community. Ultimately his legacy\, through his work and the lives he touched\, is one of joy and laughter. \n“Honoring Frank” is curated by Jennifer Mitchell-Nevin\, Anne Nevin\, and Marcia Stremlau. The exhibition will be available for viewing during library hours in the Britton Gallery and Roland Howard Room through August 29th\, with access to artwork in the Howard Room subject to the meeting schedule. For more information contact the library at 374-5515.

SUMMARY:“Paint the Peninsula Week” Fresh Paint Auction
DESCRIPTION:If you were out and about on the Blue Hill Peninsula recently\, you may have seen artists capturing a local landscape on canvas as part of the Blue Hill Public Library’s annual Paint the Peninsula fundraiser. More than ninety artists will create over one hundred paintings for the week-long auction\, which starts Monday\, July 13th. \nThis much-anticipated annual event showcases the work of local and seasonal artists\, including newcomers\, in an online auction during the week of July 13th to 18th. There will be a closing reception on Saturday\, July 18th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The final moments of bidding will take place during the reception\, which always leads to additional excitement. Last year’s auction yielded over $50\,000 in revenue and raised almost $34\,000 for the library. \nDuring the auction week\, paintings will be available for viewing online\, or in-person at the library. Offering a broad range of painting styles and points of view\, Paint the Peninsula Week is a great opportunity to start buying local art or add to an established collection. \nThis is the Blue Hill Library’s largest event fundraiser. Proceeds support both the library’s operating budget and the local arts community. Anyone can place bids on the auction website at www.fundraiser.support/BHPLptp2026. \nThe library is grateful once again to this year’s lead sponsor\, the Merle B. Grindle Agency of Blue Hill\, and to major sponsors\, the Brooklin Boat Yard\, Camden National Bank\, and First Light Realty.
