SUMMARY:The Last Navigator with Steve Thomas
DESCRIPTION:This free lecture\, richly illustrated with Steve’s photographs\, will take us to a remote island in Micronesia into a world of ocean navigation largely unknown to the West; a world in which the traditional navigator’s only directional tools are the stars\, the ocean swells and the flight paths of birds. \nIn 1983 and 1984 Steve Thomas spent eleven months on Satawal Island and in the Western Carolines as an apprentice to Mau Piailug\, then one of the last paliuw\, captains fully initiated in the Talk of Navigation\, the closely guarded\, ancient practices around reading the cosmos and the seas. \nHe chronicled his experiences and the navigational techniques in the book The Last Navigator\, first published in 1987\, and a documentary film of the same title for PBS in 1988. Now some forty years on he has updated the stories with a new generation of Satawalese islanders in the revised and fully illustrated edition of The Last Navigator.

SUMMARY:Live! for $5: Blanc sur Blanc
DESCRIPTION:A whimsical and poetic journey into the world of a clown\, Blanc sur Blanc follows performer Iman Lizarazu with the comical unraveling of a simple thread from her pants. What begins as a minor inconvenience soon reveals a web of interconnected challenges. As she faces a series of mishaps\, the clown discovers that solving problems is never as straightforward as it seems—but always with a touch of humor and creativity. This charming performance is a lighthearted exploration of how the little things in life can spiral into larger\, often absurd\, dilemmas. SUMMARY:DownEast New Music: Thanksong
DESCRIPTION:DownEast New Music presents Thanksong\, an evening of new chamber music for soprano\, string quartet\, double bass\, and piano. Built around Cassandra Miller’s intimate and magnetic Thanksong for soprano and string quartet\, this program looks inwards and examines how even small gestures can have major emotional impact. Whether through the sensuous intimacy of Amy Beth Kirsten’s yes I said yes I will Yes\, or the obscured melodrama of Tomás Gueglio’s Murlmenszenen\, this will be an evening of novel and unforgettable music. \nFor Thanksong\, DownEast New Music’s Co-Artistic directors Clare Monfredo (cello)\, Edward Kass (double bass)\, and Conrad Winslow (piano) are joined by returning violinists Robert Anemone and Lilit Hartunian\, Maine’s own Kal Sugatski (viola)\, and award-winning international opera singer Nina Guo.

SUMMARY:Not Strictly Classical
DESCRIPTION:Known for his energetic\, no-holds-barred style and called “the classical music equivalent of an extreme sports athlete” (The Record)\, contemporary classical pianist Danny Holt explores the intersection of classical music with rock\, pop\, and jazz in his “Not Strictly Classical” program. Los Angeles based composer Mike Garson (known for his work with David Bowie\, Nine Inch Nails\, and others) fuses his classical and jazz roots in eclectic works that are uniquely his own\, defying traditional genre categories; New York based jazz/pop phenom Jon Batiste reimagines Chopin through his own lens; and Japanese composer Karen Tanaka’s “Techno Etudes” are a playful evocation of electronic music. Stunningly beautiful works by French jazz/hip-hop pianist Sofiane Pamart and others round out the program\, including pieces from beloved film scores such as “Amelie”\, “The Piano”\, and “Interstellar”.
