SUMMARY:People-Nature-Art with sculptor and photographer Alex Turanski
DESCRIPTION:Alex Turanski began balancing stones (never in the national park!) in 2018 as a therapeutic practice. It was a way to exercise pure\, raw focus and to dissolve his distractions. “The act of balance fully engages me in the raw present-moment\,” he says. “In a way\, I feel that I become as present and still as the stones I engage with. I often try to find the most difficult balance points as a way to push myself deeper into a meditative practice of mind-body coordination.” Alex is the People-Nature-Art featured artist for July. \nJoin him at the Gilley on Tuesday\, July 28 for an artist’s reception at 6pm followed at 7pm by a presentation and live demonstration of his work. Alex will start with an overview of the art form and its connection to nature for him. Then he will proceed to a live demonstration and create an original sculpture inside the Gilley. There is no fee to attend\, but registration is requested to facilitate staging of this event. Sign up at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar. \nAlex’s finished sculptures are aesthetic art pieces that can be exhibited and photographed. His repertoire has grown to include live demonstrations and installations\, designing and producing his signature Rock Stack Playing Cards\, creating one-of-a-kind rock stack puzzle sets\, and filming and editing balancing videos. He received the award for Best Set Design for the stonework he created and installed for the Isle Theatre Company’s production of Do Not Move Stones\, which also won the Broadway World 2021 Maine Awards for Best Production of the Year.

SUMMARY:People-Nature-Art with Sculptor Peter Dransfield
DESCRIPTION:Maine sculptor Peter Dransfield says he has always wanted to get his hands dirty. Working with bronze foundries for almost twenty years\, he has mastered the art of casting\, fabrication and patina. He says bronze frees him from limitations of other materials. Unlike wood and stone\, bronze creates the perfect juxtaposition of finesse and strength. Peter’s sculptures show a deep understanding of his material and an eye for turning bronze into works of art. \n“I strive to create sculpture that shares its physical space\, excites the eye and draws the viewer into its gaze. The constant challenge is to transform cold and rigid metal into warm\, graceful and living sculpture that will share our homes and landscapes.” \nHis work can be seen locally at the Littlefield Gallery in Winter Harbor.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Needle-felt a Coral Reef
DESCRIPTION:Expert needle-felter\, fiber artist\, and storyteller Hillary Dow of Binding Tales will lead this fun workshop at the Gilley\, guiding participants through the process of creating a felted coral reef wall hanging. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels including beginners. \nLearn needle felting techniques as you transform puffy piles of wool into a vivid and dynamic coral reef that features several types of coral in a variety of colors with dark shadows and 3D depth. Your wool supplies will include a 5×7 wool pre-felt; blue\, purple\, green and coral blended batts; and solid color roving. All the felting tools necessary to create your piece are provided\, including several sizes of felting needles\, single and multi-needle tools\, finger guards\, and a felting pad. The rich variety of prepared colors allows for a painterly approach to needle felting. All the wool used in this project is sourced from Maine fiber farms. \nHillary will display an author-illustrator showcase of original artwork as well as her children’s books\, which will be available for sale. She is the author\, illustrator and publisher of Binding Tales books\, featuring pictures she has needle felted with wool sourced from Maine sheep. Born and raised in the western mountains of Maine\, she now lives with her family in Hampden.
