SUMMARY:Backyard Stewards Invasive Plant Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In Acadia National Park\, scientists and resource managers work hard to slow the spread of invasive plants. But plants don’t stop at park boundaries. These invasive species can be found all over Mount Desert Island\, from roadsides to landscaped gardens. \nSome of the most common invasive shrubs found in Acadia were introduced as ornamental plants and still thrive in landscaped yards and gardens across Mount Desert Island. One of the best things you can do to help stop the spread of invasive plants is to learn how to tell them apart from other plants. Become a Backyard Steward and join Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park Vegetation Manager\, Jesse Wheeler to learn techniques and tools for identifying these invasive plants in your own backyard.

SUMMARY:Make and Break -DIY Ceramic Pieces for Mosaicing
DESCRIPTION:Make Your Own Mosaic Pieces Workshop \nWhat if you could create your own mosaic pieces ? Each student will work with clay to create and paint thin tiles appropriate for mosaics. Instead of relying on commercial materials\, students will learn how to design and make custom ceramic components that reflect their own ideas\, stories\, colors\, and textures. \nParticipants will be introduced to the basics of glazing bisque ceramic tiles as well as hand-forming clay tiles using a variety of decorative and surface design techniques. Through carving\, texture\, stamps\, layering\, words\, imagery\, and colorful glazes\, students will create original mosaic elements that cannot be found anywhere else. The workshop embraces the playful “make and break” spirit of ceramics\, encouraging experimentation with scraps\, broken pieces\, and unexpected combinations. \nThis workshop opens the door to unlimited creative possibilities. Students might create pieces for a family portrait mosaic\, a decorative garden installation\, a backsplash\, house sign\, stepping stone with poetry or meaningful sayings\, candle holders\, vases\, birdbaths\, gazing ball surrounds\, or expressive wall art. The process invites storytelling\, memory\, and personal symbolism into the work while building confidence in ceramic and mosaic techniques. \nThis one of a kind workshop offers a unique opportunity in the arts district of the Acadia region to explore the creative possibilities of handmade ceramic mosaics. 6/12/2026. 5:30-7:30 \nPair this workshop with an ArtWaves membership and continue your mosaic journey during open studio time\, where mosaic glass and shared materials are available for ongoing projects and experimentation. \nArtWaves is offering a Mosaic Makers Special- combining the Intro to Mosaics class \, a membership and the Make and Break ceramics. Become part of the growing ArtWaves mosaic community — a welcoming group of makers sharing ideas\, inspiration\, techniques\, and creative energy together. \nSusan Keller has been a ceramic artist for 25 years. Her focus is on hand building functional wares such as dinnerware\, lighting\, jewelry\, wall pieces and tiles. She participates in online sales\, retail shop partnerships\, art fairs\, gallery shows and public installations. Her ceramics have been featured in several periodicals as well as ceramic technique books. Surface design and use of color are emphasized. Her latest work is in black stoneware clay with porcelain interiors and botanical designs.

SUMMARY:Coast Umami Lab
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back chef Nicholas Repenning and Pacific harvester Nathan Maxwell Cann for this series of workshop and culinary experiments in conjunction with our June Low Low Tides seaweed harvest workshop. \nJune 14: MISO EXPLORATIONS\nJune 15: KOJI EXPLORATIONS\nJune 16: INTERTIDAL KITCHEN\nJune 17: 2nd Annual Community Miso Making \nEach day consists of afternoon workshops followed by group dinner at Smithereen Farm. \nIn this suite of workshops\, we’ll deep dive into koji and miso as well as explore local umami makers in the region around us. From ancient and traditional practices to contemporary uses of these culinary tools\, let’s learn the mystical and practical wisdoms of umami! Hone your senses and open to the intimacy of taste and texture as we are guided by our other-than-human culinary and ecological partners. \nIntertidal Kitchen with Nathan Maxwell Cann\nA hands-on exploration of seaweed\, fermentation\, and the deep flavors of the shoreline\, moving from tidepool harvest to simple kitchen preparations. Participants work with dashi\, urchin gathering\, seaweed seasonings\, and koji-based techniques to understand how ecology\, process\, and taste converge into umami. \nSecond Annual Community Miso Making\nWe’ll open the miso we made at Smithereen last year and make a new batch to put away for a year. This annual tradition anchors us to our shared cultures and the flavors that only arrive when we invest time into our relationships with each other\, our culinary histories\, and the microbial world. Whether you’re returning to witness the transformation we initiated or joining for the first time\, we welcome you to our miso community. \nNathan Maxwell Cann is a Pacific harvester\, artist\, and food and beverage consultant based in Northern California. He leads workshops focused on coastal ecology\, seaweed\, and urchin management through initiatives including Flora & Fungi and the Usal Project. Nathan is also the co-chair of Kelp Fest in Mendocino\, where he collaborates with community members across disciplines to highlight the ecological and cultural significance of kelp and coastal food systems. \nNicholas Repenning is co founder of go-en fermented foods and acts as board member of Maine Ferments\, an educational non profit project here in Maine. His focus over the past decade has been commercially producing and experimenting with Japanese foods in his own fermentation laboratory. Utilizing these ancient food technologies\, Nicholas is enthusiastic to share all he has learned from these foods and the microbial partners that make it all happen.
