DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to join the Blue Hill Public Library for the annual commemoration of library benefactor\, Adelaide Pearson. The third annual Adelaide Pearson Arts Festival will take place on the library’s front lawn on Saturday\, August 8 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Local artists will present their work with live demonstrations and displays\, while also providing fun activities for kids of all ages. Featured artists include sculptor Leda Ball\, fabric painter Susan Steinbrock\, stone craftsman Alex Turanski\, metal craftsman Tanya Washburn\, and painter Lise Williams. There will also be a craft and coloring area for kids of all ages\, and a special activity with artist Kirsten Rickert who will be here to guide kids and adults in crafting natural mandalas on the lawn. \nThis event is sponsored by the library and all are welcome. SUMMARY:"Honoring Frank:" The Artwork of Francis Hamabe Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library will present\, “Honoring Frank\,” a comprehensive exhibit at the Blue Hill Public Library of the works of Francis Hamabe (1917-2002)\, beginning with prints created in the 1940s while he was overseas during World War II\, until his last drawings\, made from a hospital bed in 2002. “Honoring Frank” will open on August 3rd and continue to the 29th. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday\, August 7th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The special exhibit is presented in conjunction with the Castine Historical Society\, which is hosting “Francis Hamabe’s Maine: A Life in Art” through October 12. \nWorks on display will include cartoons\, cubist style paintings\, abstract works\, painted ceramics\, silkscreens on nautical charts\, and posters. Frank was multifaceted as he worked fluidly between his varied styles depicting images of Blue Hill\, his home for 47 years\, and coastal and eastern Maine towns from Camden to Bangor to Machias in watercolors and prints. \nThe artists Hamabe most admired were Stuart Davis\, Alexander Calder\, and John Marin\, whose influence is evident in Hamabe’s recurring themes of harbor views\, fishing boats\, churches\, Maine villages\, and children playing. His work was also rooted in both Japanese and Swedish cultures\, reflecting his own heritage. His later calligraphic images leap off the page in exuberant color with gestural movement\, while his line drawings of village life are reminiscent of Scandinavian folk designs. \nMany of the works included in the exhibit are on loan from private collectors\, some of whom worked with him at the University of Maine in Orono when he was the director for the Maine Public radio station. Down East Magazine covers\, greeting cards\, notes\, and the leather satchel he used to carry his painting supplies will be on view. There will be a selection of prints and paintings for sale with part of the proceeds benefiting the library. \nAccompanying the exhibit is a catalogue featuring items culled from the library’s Hamabe archives\, donated by his widow\, Phyllis Hamabe\, in 2012. These items touch on his early years in Orange\, New Jersey where he was born and raised\, the son of a Japanese immigrant father and Swedish immigrant mother. Photographs document his time as an enlisted medic in the US Army and later as the first art teacher at the Farnsworth Museum. Also included are press clippings from his puppet performances\, his 1996 honorary degree from the University of Maine at Machias\, and recollections from students\, colleagues\, and friends who knew him best. \nFrank was an artist of extraordinary kindness and generosity\, who loved his family\, friends\, and community. Ultimately his legacy\, through his work and the lives he touched\, is one of joy and laughter. \n“Honoring Frank” is curated by Jennifer Mitchell-Nevin\, Anne Nevin\, and Marcia Stremlau. The exhibition will be available for viewing during library hours in the Britton Gallery and Roland Howard Room through August 29th\, with access to artwork in the Howard Room subject to the meeting schedule. DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library and ISLE Theater Company will present a playwriting workshop with playwright Eliya Smith on Thursday\, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the library. Drawing inspiration from Anton Chekhov and his artistic successors\, this workshop will explore how to use character\, dialogue\, dramatic action\, and structure through discussion and guided writing exercises to create emotionally rich worlds onstage. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencil\, though materials will also be provided. \nEliya Smith is a playwright from Columbus\, Ohio\, with a MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. \nBased out of the historic Shakespeare School on Deer Isle\, ISLE Theater Company is a performing arts organization dedicated to creating professional\, community-driven work in unique spaces that connect audiences with new places\, people\, and perspectives. DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has been watching Ken Burns’ most recent documentary will recognize Dr. Taylor as the main “talking head” in the documentary. Dr. Taylor is a local guy\, who graduated Colby College before finding fame as a historian. He has authored 11 books dealing with Maine and American history\, including “Liberty Men and Great Proprietors: The Revolutionary Settlement on the Maine Frontier\, 1760–1820” and “The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens\, British Subjects\, Irish Rebels\, and Indian Allies” with the first being entirely and the second being in large part about Maine’s history. Alan Taylor’s talk will be about Joseph Plumb Martin\, a common soldier of the Revolution who settled after the war in Stockton Springs and wrote a vivid memoir about life as a common soldier.

Taylor’s talk will examine the experiences of a young Continental Soldier in the American Revolutionary War\, Joseph Plumb Martin\, who wrote the only book-length memoir of a soldier’s experiences in that war. \nAlan Taylor grew up in Maine and is a graduate of Colby College (1977) with a doctorate in American History from Brandeis University (1986). DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library will present a poetry reading with poets Christine Yurick and David Yezzi on Thursday\, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Howard Room. \nDavid Yezzi’s latest books are “Late Romance: Anthony Hecht—A Poet’s Life” (St. Martin’s Press) and More Things in Heaven: New and Selected Poems (Measure Press). He teaches in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University and is a 2024 James Merrill House Fellow and a 2025-6 Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. \nChristine Yurick is the founding editor of Think Journal and her poems have appeared in E-Verse\, Angle\, American Arts Quarterly\, Tulane Review\, and 823 on High\, among other journals.
