Five weekly concerts will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday July 3\, 10\, 24\, 31\, and August 7 (there will be no concert on Friday\, July 17). Musicians from Kneisel Hall’s Young Artist program will be performing a variety of chamber music and will engage their young audience with information about the music and their instruments and answering questions. DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library and ISLE Theater Company will present a playwriting workshop with playwright Eliya Smith on Thursday\, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the library. Drawing inspiration from Anton Chekhov and his artistic successors\, this workshop will explore how to use character\, dialogue\, dramatic action\, and structure through discussion and guided writing exercises to create emotionally rich worlds onstage. DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has been watching Ken Burns’ most recent documentary will recognize Dr. Taylor as the main “talking head” in the documentary. Dr. Taylor is a local guy\, who graduated Colby College before finding fame as a historian. He has authored 11 books dealing with Maine and American history\, including “Liberty Men and Great Proprietors: The Revolutionary Settlement on the Maine Frontier\, 1760–1820” and “The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens\, British Subjects\, Irish Rebels\, and Indian Allies” with the first being entirely and the second being in large part about Maine’s history. Alan Taylor’s talk will be about Joseph Plumb Martin\, a common soldier of the Revolution who settled after the war in Stockton Springs and wrote a vivid memoir about life as a common soldier.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue Hill Public Library and Blue Hill Historical Society will present a talk with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Mainer Alan Taylor on Saturday\, July 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s Pearson Room. Taylor’s talk will examine the experiences of a young Continental Soldier in the American Revolutionary War\, Joseph Plumb Martin\, who wrote the only book-length memoir of a soldier’s experiences in that war. \nAlan Taylor grew up in Maine and is a graduate of Colby College (1977) with a doctorate in American History from Brandeis University (1986). Taylor has published eleven books\, two of which have won the Pulitzer Prize. \nThis program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:If you were out and about on the Blue Hill Peninsula recently\, you may have seen artists capturing a local landscape on canvas as part of the Blue Hill Public Library’s annual Paint the Peninsula fundraiser. More than ninety artists will create over one hundred paintings for the week-long auction\, which starts Monday\, July 13th. \nThis much-anticipated annual event showcases the work of local and seasonal artists\, including newcomers\, in an online auction during the week of July 13th to 18th. There will be a closing reception on Saturday\, July 18th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The final moments of bidding will take place during the reception\, which always leads to additional excitement. Last year’s auction yielded over $50\,000 in revenue and raised almost $34\,000 for the library. \nDuring the auction week\, paintings will be available for viewing online\, or in-person at the library. Offering a broad range of painting styles and points of view\, Paint the Peninsula Week is a great opportunity to start buying local art or add to an established collection. \nThis is the Blue Hill Library’s largest event fundraiser. Proceeds support both the library’s operating budget and the local arts community.
