General Manager Search

WERU Community Radio 89.9 FM, Blue Hill, Maine invites applications for the position of General Manager. Qualified applicants will have a keen interest in mission driven, volunteer-led public radio and a desire to build on our history and success through the continued engagement of our community and the voices, tools and technologies of the future.

WERU Community Radio

WERU is a thriving community asset operated by the 501(c)(3) Salt Pond Community Broadcasting non-profit organization.  On the air since 1988, WERU Community Radio is an independent, listener-supported and volunteer-powered media organization whose mission is to provide diverse programming to lift spirits, raise awareness and make connections. WERU is a “voice of many voices”.  Our local, volunteer programmers offer a wide variety of music, spoken word and community minded public affairs programs which are supplemented by programming from national sources.

Broadcasting at 12,000 watts and streaming on the world wide web, WERU serves an estimated 25,000 suburban and rural listeners primarily in (or with connections to) Mid-coast, Downeast and Central Maine. In addition to the traditional broadcast audience, the WERU website (weru.org) reports 1.6K listens/streams per month and the mobile app provides another 2.0K listens/streams per month.  The organization includes 3000 donors/members and a small group of  paid staff including the General Manager.

Role of the General Manager

Reporting to a supportive, elected Board of Directors, the General Manager (GM) provides overall leadership and oversight of daily station operations, personnel (a small paid staff and a large corps of dedicated volunteers), and infrastructure for the radio station.   The GM is also responsible (directly and, as appropriate, with staff, volunteer or Board support) for overall administration, finance, public relations and marketing, fundraising, programming, and technical operations of the station. This includes ensuring quality programming that meets community needs, generates listener support, and fulfills the mission of WERU; successful broadcast operations; timely and accurate reporting (financial and other); and compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.

The well qualified candidate will have professional experience in broadcast media, nonprofit administration and fundraising, or other management that includes budgeting, financial oversight, and supervision; sincere interest in community radio; and familiarity in some capacity with volunteer-powered organizations. The ideal candidate will also possess excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; a high degree of computer literacy; creative and practical problem-solving abilities; demonstrated commitment to professional ethics and to meeting deadlines; and ability to collaborate constructively with diverse individuals and ideas. Humor, patience, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities are also good tools to have at the ready in community radio.

For specific information about the position and qualifications please see the downloadable GM Job Description 2026.
