e-WERU for November 2017
We hope that everyone made it through the power outage safely and that WERU was a good friend to you throughout it all. If you still don’t have the power back on we hope you get it very soon!
Fall Pledge Drive, November 4-11!
Let’s work together, on Saturday, November 4 through Saturday morning, November 11, to make WERU sustainable and strong! Our goals through the end of the year are $80,000 and 100 New Members, and we can only do it with your financial support. So please call the pledge line at (800) 643-6273, or contribute online at weru.org. All the diverse and great music, all the informative news and public affairs programs, and all the interesting spoken short features depend on you. Become a New Member or Sustaining Member. Become a Business Member. Increase your Sustainer amount. Make an additional gift. There are many ways to contribute to WERU. Thank you for your support!

Live and Local Folk Music on WERU, November 11, with The Gawler Family
To put a very nice exclamation point on the Pledge Drive we’ll have members of local favorites The Gawler Family giving a live studio performance on Saturday, November 11 at 10 a.m. Tune in for some terrific folk music by two generations of the family that has been stalwarts of the Maine and New England folk scene for decades! (The Gawlers will be part of the Childsplay concert at the Gracie Theatre at Husson University in Bangor on November 17 and at the Portland Junior High School Auditorium.)
Propane Contributions Thanks
Many thanks to the folks who have pitched in to pay for the propane we used during the power outages after the windy storm last Sunday and Monday. WERU’s studios and transmitter on Blue Hill Mountain ran on propane using $1,000 of fuel to keep the station on the airwaves. You too can pitch in at (800) 643-6273, or weru.org. Thank you!
Radio News Award
WERU has been awarded the Maine Association of Broadcasters 2017 Radio News Award (first place!) for the locally produced program “Maine Currents: Immigrant Legislation Testimony,” produced by Amy Browne, News & Public Affairs Manager. Great work Amy, and great work to the rest of the Staff, Volunteers and Members for making the station possible so that this kind of programming excellence is on the airwaves!
Happy Thanksgiving & Giving Tuesday
Happy 2017 Thanksgiving to everyone from WERU! We also wish you a terrific Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this year on November 28. Giving Tuesday is all about celebrating and supporting nonprofit organizations that do important work in local and statewide communities, everything from fighting poverty to developing our Main Streets to promoting the arts and more.
WERU will celebrate Giving Tuesday by airing two hour-long live special broadcasts at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the theme of “Giving Voice to Our Community.” Nonprofit organizations of all kinds are invited to call the WERU studio at 469-0500 or toll-free at 866-625-9378, and speak over the airwaves to share a little bit about their organizations and the ways that the public can support them. Each nonprofit representative will have three minutes to speak.
Tell Your Friends!
The best way to introduce people to Community Radio is by word of mouth, and the best people to do that are you the listeners of WERU. So please encourage the people you know to tune in!
New Volunteer orientation takes place at WERU on the third Thursday of each month, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. To learn about volunteering at WERU please contact Susan Pierce at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 469-6600.
